hahaha - yea, i was having a smiley-good-time, for sure!
I also crossed that first bridge, but the cars behind us started honking wildly so we turned around. I think it was Jill and Thierry in their truck, and we were very grateful!! That bridge crossing instruction definitely could have used some clarification - agreed!

Immediately after the pre race meeting Mark Hirrel, Ben Lee and I got back to our car and by the time we got on the road all the kayakers were gone so we couldn't follow anyone to the put in. We got LOST ;( We mistakenly thought that the Albright bridge was the bridge we were suppose to cross. We realized we went the wrong way when we got to Kingwood :( . By the time we got to the put in everyone was lined up ready to start. I quickly got my gear on and just when I got my boat on my shoulder I noticed everyone sliding down the bank. I hauled ass and sprinted across the parking lot and got in my boat as quickly as I could. A couple of guys helped my with my bib and skirt.Essentially I was about 1 or 2 mins behind everyone. I don't remember how many I passed but I hope I got to the middle of the pack. Like Travis said the waves were huge and it was fun flying over them, one could certainly get some air launching off some of the waves. I'm slightly disappointed that the race course was changed (completely understand given the level) considering all the training but overall it was fun. Read and Race was pretty cool.I do remember one kayaker I passed and all I heard was "please don't hit me!", "please don't hit me!". I guess she was a tad nervous. ALSO I vividly remember 2 of the biggest smiles during the race, Jen Sass & Robert Goo. Here I am with my snot covered race face grunting away with each stroke trying to catch people I look over Jen was smiling away as usual (Same with Robert Goo). It did made me question my race strategy & philosophy. :)Overall it was fun, lets all do it again next year!John SuOn Monday, May 9, 2016 10:48 AM, Travis Vice <george.travis.vice@gmail.com> wrote:
I raced without a bibb because I showed up about 20 minutes before the race so I have no official time. There were a couple of accidents on the way to Albright including a semi on fire.Anyways, the plan was to get everyone in the water and do a mass start. So everyone lined up on the bank (except me because I thought I had time to get in my boat and line up.) So Rick told everyone to get in the water and someone said go. Before you know it, everyone was heading downstream. I tried to quickly hop in my boat and race. So I definitely had a 30 second disadvantage.I passed about 25-30 people in the first 15 minutes. I only passed 5-10 people during the rest of the race. There were 83 entrants (not counting me) and I think I finished middle of the pack. I still have no idea of my time. I know I finished about 10-15 seconds of the lone stand up paddle boarder. The waves were awesome. I think someone said 11 ft waves and I tend to believe that. It made the karma UL look small. Calamity was awesome looking but fairly easy to manuever. It definitely looked huge and probably some of the biggest waves I have seen in a kayak. All told, I had a fantastic race because I never stopped and pushed myself pretty well. Probably the best part was that my wife and kid were waiting for me at the finish line. Gave me a cool feeling to do a race when I am not really that type of boater. Would definitely do again.-Travis--On May 9, 2016 10:34 AM, "'Megan' via LAKS advanced" <upper_yough_training_group@googlegroups.com> wrote:--To those who braved the waters and banks of the mighty Cheat Narrows on Friday, will you share some stories?Who raced? How was the river? Any monster holes or just big fun waves? Did they still do a mass start? How long did the run take? How was the spectating? Was it possible to get to good spots to watch? Thanks from the vicarious racing team. :)PSI was right about Albright being downstream from the racecourse! Must have been a premonition. (Still looking for a way to recover from my rather embarrassing brain lapse regarding the location of Albright relative to the Canyon.)
