Hi All!I have added all the new members to the Cheat Training list serve for this year! If you are receiving this and are not in Cheat Training, what are you waiting for!? There are still spots left here- Cheat Training Info You are welcome to stay on this list because you love to hear the Cheat levels and banter or remove yourself by following the link at the bottom of this email. For the rest of you-- Welcome to Cheat Training 2017! We are very happy you are paddling with us this spring. We have a great instructor line-up and I know it's gonna be a great year.We use this email chain to send out changes to where and when to meet, info about your sessions and other trips. You can change your settings to get condensed emails or remove yourself from the list after the Cheat season. You may use this list serve to communicate with the whole group. Please note that if you hit reply to any email you will send it to everyone. For those of you in Cheat Elite, you will get a separate email.
Our first meeting is next Wednesday, March 8th at Anglers. Since the sunsets early that day, we hope you can make it some time between 4-5 pm. Normally, and every Wednesday there after, you should arrive sometime between 5 - 6 pm. We will have instructors heading out with a group of you as you arrive. Ending time is somewhere between 7- 8 pm. We have 8 wednesday attainments. If you can't make a Wednesday, you can make it up on a Thursday with either Cheat Elite or Cheat Lite. Please email me and let me know!
Saturdays in March are downriver paddles starting 3/11. We will meet at Sycamore at 9 am to set shuttle and head up to Great Falls, MD. The Sycamore Island parking area is on Clara Barton Parkway. If you are heading toward the city, just past Lock 7 and the turn-off to MacArthur at Glen Echo, you will go under a pedestrian bridge and the parking area will be immediately on your right. Space is limited at this parking area. Please try to carpool and arrive early.
4 Saturdays in April are trips to the Cheat. More info will follow about meeting time and place. The first trip is 4/8, the Cheat Race is May 5.
The water on the Potomac is still quite cold in March and April and we always want you to dress for a swim. The minimum cold weather gear you will need to have is a drytop and dry or neoprene pants, warm synthetic layers under, booties or river shoes with socks, and pogies or gloves. People also like to have a drysuit, a neoprene hat or hood, and nose plugs. You will also need to have a long boat for this program, something over 10 feet. If you don't have a boat, let us know, check craigslist, paddle prattle and various facebook pages. We will work it out!
We have an awesome group of instructors and assistants this season, lead by Steve-O, Patrick Murray, Ashley Nee, and Bobby Miller, Jen Sass, Megan O'Reilly, and Jim Wilson. They are a knowledgeable, enthusiastic team and I know they are looking forward to paddling with you! They are always available for questions or you can send them my way.
At the start of the program, everyone may be feeling some nerves. Water is cold, you may be in a new boat, and haven't paddled for a while. You will see people that have participated in Cheat Training for a couple of years and feel a bit behind speed. The reason that so many people come back is for the camaraderie, being able to encourage newer paddlers, and the knowledge that Cheat Training works- better and better the more workouts you attend! Talk to your instructors about how you are feeling. Fear management is a big part of kayaking and I, personally, have found that it applies to so many different areas of my life. Challenge yourself just a little more each time you come out.
So stoked to see you next Wednesday!
