Re: cheat_training_group Re: Week 5 - First Cheat Trip!

Did this workout last night it was amazing!!

When you are doing your stern draw, make sure to keep that top hand at the level! That gives you awesome leverage! And if you need a little more "umph" factor put a little boat edge on the side you are doing the stroke on.

I'll be at the strainer to point y'all in the right direction!

Hi OG Cheat,

For tonight's workout, we are going to head downstream through Offutt (this is the far left channel). Please be aware that there is a strainer in this channel. You can easily get around it if you are paying attention. At the bottom of Offutt island we will head up the middle channel. This will give us a good warm up before we head up to MD chute.

At Maryland Chute, try the ferry at least 3 times. It is a great place to practice holding your bow in place with the stern draw. If you can't make MD head over to VA and we can try the two moves there. Turn around time is 7:45. See you there!

Staff- we want to have someone positioned at the strainer, at Offutt, in the middle channel, at MD, at VA, and 1 at wet bottom. Please rotate through.

Cheers!

Hi Cheat & Cheat Elite,

Get stoked- this Saturday is our first trip! We are scheduled to go to the Cheat... but we are watching the levels. If the Cheat is over 5 feet on the bridge gauge we will make other plans, likely the Kitzmiller section of the North Branch of the Potomac. It is a great run- wave trains, big lines, lots of smiles! We will make the final call via email on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning so please do check email.

Using the Keelhauler calculator and the USGS Gauge for the Cheat River at Albright the level is currently 6.8 ft.

The goal for this program is to get you comfortable in your long boat. If you are feeling it, please bring your long boat. For Cheat original, if you are more comfortable in your creeker for higher river levels then bring that and know you will need to go with a slower group.

No matter where we head, we will meet this Saturday (and for the following 3 Saturdays) at 7 am at the Gaithersburg Park and Ride. From here, please carpool with someone who is in your same paddling group (Cheat Original together, Cheat Elite together) and has a vehicle with higher clearance. If we are heading to the Cheat please see directions below. If we chose another river or section we will email out the destination.

Cheat Original
Please meet at 10 am at the put in for the Cheat near  the bridge in Albright at
 39.496331, -79.644476
Please change quickly, drop your boats, and drive down to the take out. We will run shuttle on the front end so your car will be at the takeout when you get there.

Cheat Elite
Please drive directly down to the take out. From the Bruceton Mills exit on 68, turn left onto N Preston Highway. Take a right at the Kwik Stop in Preston onto Hudson Rd. It is a long road and there is one intersection near a church that you take a slight left at (not hard left, not right). Follow the High Bridge Rd. If you haven't done it before, I recommend riding with someone who has. We will meet you in the take out parking lot with two shuttle vans & trailers about 10:30. This will set us up to take two Cheat runs.

Sunday should be a good day for creeking and there are a couple of spots left with Steve-O! https://calleva.org/liquid-adventures-kayak/advanced/trips/wv-creekin/

This is the plan for every weekend so even if we are at Kitzmiller this weekend or you are not able to attend this weekend, please hold on to this email.

Steve-O's number is 240.678.8768. Unfortunately I am missing this weekend. See you this week for the attainment.

Have a great time!

Ashley McEwan
