Reading and Math Proficiency Increases for Ward 5 Students
The District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC CAS) exam results for 2013 show that Ward 5 public school students are becoming more proficient in math and reading. Compared to last year, math proficiency rates increased 3.1 percentage points. The reading proficiency rate rose .03 percentage points. These increases mean that 42 percent of students at Ward 5 public schools are proficient in math and 40 percent are proficient in reading.
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) administers the DC CAS exam each spring to students at public and public charter schools in grades 2 through 10. Private school students do not take the DC CAS exam. The 2013 results were released on July 29.
There are four standout schools among the 13 public elementary and middle schools in Ward 5: DC Preparatory Public Charter Middle School (Edgewood Campus), Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, Elsie Whitlow Stokes Public Charter School, and DC Preparatory Public Charter Elementary School (Edgewood Campus).
Students at these schools demonstrated the highest proficiency rates in both reading and math compared to their Ward 5 peers. 79% of students at DC Prep Middle School achieved proficiency in reading and 92% achieved proficiency in math. At Washington Yu Ying, 70% of students achieved proficiency in reading and 81% achieved proficiency in math. At Stokes School, 64% of students achieved proficiency in reading and 71% achieved proficiency in math. At DC Prep Elementary School, 68% of students achieved proficiency in reading and 76% achieved proficiency in math.
Among Ward 5 public high school students, reading and math proficiency at McKinley Technology High School dwarfed the performance of students at other local public high schools. At 82% reading proficiency and 91% math proficiency, students at McKinley Tech achieved proficiency levels in some cases double those of the other four public high schools in Ward 5: Phelps Architecture Construction and Engineering High School, Washington Math Science Technology High School, Dunbar High School, and Perry Street Prep Public Charter High School.
DC CAS elementary and middle school scores include students from 2nd to 8th grade. High school scores represent all students from 9th to 12th grade.
