DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SEEKS OMBUDSMAN FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION
Washington, DC – The D.C. State Board of Education (State Board) seeks a qualified Ombudsman for Public Education. The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education was originally established in 2007 as a critical part of the District's education reform plans. The Ombudsman for Public Education position was re-established and transferred to the State Board of Education by the "State Board of Education Personnel Authority Amendment Act of 2012."
The primary role of the Ombudsman for Public Education is to provide District students and parents or guardians with accurate and timely communication regarding public education across the District, so that the public is apprised and engaged. To this end, the Ombudsman will work with other education entities to identify and share trends in educational services, help ensure access for all, and identify potential areas for improvement of services. The Ombudsman will also be a resource for students and parents when they do not know where to find the answer to a question or concern.
In addition, the Ombudsman will establish and maintain effective processes for encouraging communication, responding to concerns, and resolving issues, faced by students and their families in District of Columbia public and public charter school. To that end, the Ombudsman will facilitate and/or mediate conversations between parents and school officials, toward the resolution of conflicts that arise during the school year, focusing primarily on what is best for students and advocating for equitable processes along the way. If necessary, the Ombudsman will provide professional assistance with conflict resolution.
