DPW To Observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan. 20
Sanitation And Parking Enforcement Services Will Be Suspended.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected Monday, January 20, 2014, when the District observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Trash and recycling collections, street and alley cleaning, and parking enforcement will be suspended. All services will resume Tuesday, January 21.
Trash/recycling collections: Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.
Parking Enforcement: DPW will suspend enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions. Also, booting and abandoned vehicle removal will be suspended. Full enforcement resumes Tuesday, January 21.
Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed. Residents may resume bringing bulk trash and recyclables on Tuesday, January 21, between 1 pm and 5 pm.
The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is February 1, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays). To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW is accepting only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (January 30, from 1 pm to 5 pm). DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor arrives on Saturday.

Holiday Tree and Greenery Collections: Residents disposing of holiday trees and other greenery should strip them of all ornaments and tinsel, and place the trees and greenery where DPW collects their trash and recycling. The trees and greenery will be collected for the next two weeks. Once the trees at the transfer stations, they will be separated from the trash to be composted. REMINDER: DPW collects trees from single family households and residential buildings with three or fewer living units. Residents who live in apartment buildings with four or more units should have their trash/recycling hauler collect their trees.
