Spending a night somewhere along the banks of the Cheat River - or any other river that is an isolated canyon - is something that we should all be prepared for, anytime we put onto the river.
For me, that means warm, dry clothing (or whatever you are wearing if you have a good dry suit), fire starter, a lighter and matches (I carry both), a space blanket, a small flashlight, extra food, water treatment tablets, and duct tape (for everything else). I call this my "Tom-proof kit".
I also make sure that I am dressed for a swim (mine or someone elses), a lengthy rescue, and an overnight on the riverbank. That means either a full dry suit, or a dry bag with an extra dry layer of clothing, and at least matches and a lighter for a fire (for warmth and a signal). It may be for me, or it may be for a friend that I am sitting with, keeping warm and comfortable. Dress for your team!
