Commissioner Higgins -- For the second year in a row, you have done an OUTSTANDING job as newbie commissioner organizing your community's celebration. Clearly, all attendess have a marvelous time; the time, energy and volunteer efforts by yourself and your community did not go unnoticed or unheralded by city leadership. They showed up to support your efforts and to celebrate with your 5B02 constituency. Great job!!!
Very kind regards,
Commissioner Carolyn C. Steptoe

WHAT IS AN ANC?
The Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) are locally elected bodies which shall advise the Council of the District of Columbia, the Mayor and each executive agency, the Government of the District of Columbia, all independent agencies, boards and commissions with respect to all proposed matters of District of Columbia governmental policy including but not limited to decisions regarding planning, streets, recreation, social service programs, education, health, safety, and sanitation which affect the Commission area. Subject: 5B02 Family and Community Day - THANK YOU
Greetings Ward 5!
It is with great appreciation, that I thank each and everyone of you that came out to support our 5B02 Family and Community Day at the Dwight Mosley Athletic Complex formerly Taft Recreation. Festivities were held on Saturday, July 26, 2014. All of the activities, food and beverages were donated by the community, 5B02 residents, and businesses. The young adults that frequent the athletic complex raised ALL of the monies for the sound equipment, and musical instruments. Original Facez and TOB donated their musical talents to entertain the community.
A "HEARTY" shout out to Muriel Bower's Campaign - Dion Townley, Councilman Vincent Orange, At-Large candidates Robert Smith, Carol Schwartz, and, our beloved W5 First Lady Romaine Thomas, ANC 5B Commissioners Carolyn Steptoe- 5B04, Michael Morrison- 5B03, and Jenese Jones- 5B05, for their support and attendance.
But without a doubt, this 2nd Annual 5B02 Family and Community Day belonged to the children! Space Jam Moon Bounce, LLC saved the day. The Jumbo sized moon bounce came with an internal basketball hoop and dual slide for children's enjoyment.
For the second year in a row, The Fifth District Metropolitan Police came out in full force to support and protect! The Fifth District Police Department's outreach branch, Fayette Vaughn-Lee provided Popcorn and Snow Cones for everyone. On such a hot day, what a refreshing treat. Thank you Lt Durand for also stopping by. Kudos to Commander Dierdre Porter for a fantastic team. Lt Glaze and Engine 17 stopped by to give support as well, thank you. Keep up the good work!!
The community also enjoyed the Department of Interior's, Bureau of Land Management's, Theresa Jefferson who intrigued the children with several animal skin displays, creating butterflies, bird watching, and storytelling. DC PTA's President Gwendolyn Griffin had goodie bags full of information for school aged children and their parents, and a book give away. Let's not forget the infamous - "Children's Corner"! The Children's Corner was the place to be for face painting, board games, building blocks, coloring, reading, and just a down right good time for the 1 - 10 year old.
For the sports lover in you, Mr. Simmeon Williams hosted four basketball tournaments for men ages 21 - 55 years. The basketball tournament brought men and women of all ages out to enjoy the games.
The Family and Community Day festival would not have been as successful without a fantastic committee. The Committee Members were Ms. Marian Thomas, Mr. Simmeon Williams, Sr., and Ms. Anisha Claggett. I appreciate each of you for your individual talents and combined commitment the 5B02 community.
