DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION sCHEDULES ROUNDTABLE: "ONE YEAR LATER: A DISCUSSION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE COMPULSORY EDUCATION AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS."
The State Board of Education's Truancy and Student Engagement Committee invites you to attend our public roundtable "One Year Later: A Discussion of the Implementation of the Compulsory Education and School Attendance Regulations."
The State Board approved revised compulsory attendance regulations in the summer of 2013, which mandated earlier points of school level interventions and referrals for truant students. Since then, reports of the tragic case of 8-year-old homeless student Relisha Rudd, whose unaddressed record of school absences was linked to her demise, have spurred intense attention to this issues. The State Board has also heard reports of challenges schools have faced in implementing the new rules, including a lack of resources and staff members to keep up with compliance. More recently, the media has reported on the difficulties schools may face in making accommodation to truancy protocols for individual students, such as in the case of piano prodigy Avery Gagliano.
The State Board's Committee on Truancy and Student Engagement is convening a public roundtable in order to evaluate the implementation of the new compulsory attendance regulations and receive feedback on strategies and resources that could be used to help schools manage the arduous work of compliance and to ensure parents and students receive clear information about absences and referrals.
The roundtable will provide an opportunity for education stakeholders to share their perspectives on existing gaps in the District's current compulsory attendance laws and regulations. It also will provide a forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving the implementation of these regulations.
