For Immediate Release: November 24, 2014 Contact: Hazel Bland Thomas
The D.C. Federation of Democratic Women deeply mourns the passing of Councilmember and four-term Mayor Marion Barry, a visionary leader who cared so much for the residents of the District of Columbia. Former Mayor Barry fought tirelessly to improve the lives of women, children and families, and served the community of Washington, DC boldly to the very end. CM Barry's story is one of great courage, relentless empowerment, triumph and inspiration.
Marion Barry's fifty-year commitment to civil rights, human rights and public service are an indelible part of his life and legacy. During his entire career, he promoted equal pay, access to career advancement and political empowerment for women. Former Mayor Barry was a brilliant political strategist and the embodiment of the D.C. Democratic Party; his passing leaves a great void in the political fabric of the District and he will be sorely missed.
Our sincere condolences are extended to former Mayor Barry's wife, Cora Masters Barry; his son, Christopher Barry; Family and friends in the loss of a great, political giant and stalwart leader.
