The Challenge

Providing young people with accurate, balanced books on Africa is crucial (see "I Didn't Know There were Cities in Africa").There has been improvement in the quality of books on Africa for young people, but many still promote exotic Africa, wild kingdom Africa, poverty-stricken Africa, or conflict-driven Africa.

Biased books lead many American children to disparage Africa and distance themselves from any association with Africa. African immigrant children learn quickly how little Americans know about Africa and experience first-hand racist attitudes toward Africa,

Misinformation about Africa affects our country's relations with and policies toward African countries. If negative stereotypes prevail, then as citizens young people are unlikely to challenge policies that are paternalistic or exploitative.

Our Response
