The Grand Review Parade Weekend: Sesquicentennial Event A New Birth of Freedom & Union Contact: Frank Smith, franksmith@afroamcivilwar.org & info@afroamcivilwar.org 202-369-5119 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington DC -- More than 1,000 re-enactors and descendants of Civil War soldiers are expected to participate in the Grand Review Parade Sunday to mark the closing of the Civil War 150 years ago. "People are coming from all around to witness this closing event of the Civil War activities that have been going on throughout the country since 2011," said Frank Smith, founding Director of the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum in Washington DC and national host for the event. The African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation has teamed up with Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Col. David Childs, 1st Reg, USVA and Malcolm Beech of the USCT Living History Association to organize the Grand Review Parade. The Grand Review will start at Noon on Sunday, May 17th and will proceed along Pennsylvania Ave, from 3rd Street NW to 13th Street where a reviewing stand will be built to resemble the stand placed in front of the White House in 1865. No African American regiments were allowed to march in 1865 but the 2015 march will correct that injustice. "Washington gets hundreds of marches each year but none as significant as the Grand Review which celebrates the union forces that ended slavery and kept America united under one flag," said Mayor Bowser. "We are proud to host the Review." Col. Childs, USVA and one of the lead organizers for Second Manassas and Bentonville said "I am watching all the members of the re-enactment hobby register to march in the Grand Review, I love it when a plan comes together." The Grand Review Week-end will include a living history exhibit at William Lloyd Garrison School with reenactors, a play about Harriet Tubman and much music and fun. There also will also be a program at the African American Civil War Museum that will include Roll Call of State Sesquicentennial Commission activities from around the country. A descendant's stage will beat the African American Civil War Memorial where people will educate the public on the role of actual soldiers as told by family members. Most of the events are free to the public, however, registration is recommended. Marchers will be required to pay a $25 fee and dress in Civil War period dress. For more information about the parade; including a full calendar of the weekend of events please visit the Grand Review Parade website, www.grandreviewparade.org. #
