Subject: announcement, Literacy Carnival @ Eastern HS, Saturday 5/9 10am to 2pm

Good afternoon!

I would like to share an announcement with you and your constituents about Reach Incorporated's 3rd Annual Literacy Carnival!  This is a family-fun event for the Capitol Hill community on Saturday, May 9th, 10am to 2pm, at Eastern Senior High School (1700 East Capitol Street NE, Washington DC 2003). I hope to collaborate with you to spread the word about this event and promote the importance of literacy education.

At the carnival, we will gather young readers, Ages 3 to 8, to play literacy-based games like the Spell & Splash Dunk Tank and the Rhyme Zone Spinner, while practicing reading skills. Kids will earn tickets to be redeemed at the First Book DC Prize Pavilion to earn a variety of prizes, including books to build their own home libraries. High school students from Reach's after-school program will run the games, along with volunteers from partner organizations.

Background on Reach Incorporated:

Reach Incorporated is a local nonprofit, and partner with the Mayor's Office to Empower Males of Color, that addresses the illiteracy crisis in DC Public Schools by training teens to teach. Our unique model caught the attention of WJLA's Leon Harris, featuring us as "Harris' Heroes" on the ABC evening news. During the school year, our trained teen tutors work in elementary schools and community centers across the city (200 total participants). Through the process, both the teens and their students experience significant improvement. During the summer, our teens author children's books in an effort to create content more relevant to the children they tutor. And, for the last two years, our tutors have led a special day of literacy fun at the end of the school year.

We'd love for you to stop by the carnival and meet our kids!

Thank you for your support,

Sully
