Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope you take some time today to be with family, friends, and loved ones, wherever you are (and always give thanks for all that you have).
I won’t provide a list of events today, but I do want to take this opportunity to update you on some items:
· Yesterday was the second year anniversary of the departure of our Mayor for Life Marion Barry (3/6/36 - 11/23/2014). We know that Mayor Barry has a permanent place in our hearts, but now he also has a permanent Memorial at the Congressional Cemetery here in DC (1801 E St SE, Washington, DC 20003). The Marion Barry Memorial was unveiled yesterday. I broadcasted the entire ceremony on my Facebook page, please watch this beautiful ceremony at: https://www.facebook.com/franklingarciadc/videos/10154226608086925/ to continue to pay tribute to our Mayor for Life Marion Barry. Speakers included, Mrs. Cora Masters Barry, Mayor Bowser, Chairman Mendelson, and others.
· After the election on November 8th, many of us have been silent. What we in the District of Columbia will be vocal about is the victory DC Statehood received at the polls on election day. Over 80% of DC voters said YES TO DC STATEHOOD. Let me thank all that helped get the word out to help us achieve that high number: Statehood YES! Campaign, New Columbia Statehood Commission, DC Vote, FreeDC, Neighbors United for DC Statehood, DC for Democracy, DC Latino Caucus, DC Democratic Party, and so many others. Please watch Mayor Bowser’s Press Conference on November 9th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M143_GRibHs, (my comments come in at: 25:25). I also want to thank everyone that voted for me on November 8th. I am as committed as ever to fight for DC Statehood and the rights of the people of the Nation’s Capital that continue to be denied full democracy, and who are treated like second class citizens, while residing in the largest democracy in the world.
· I have heard from many people in our city concerned about the District of Columbia, a Sanctuary City, given the many threats by President-Elect Trump during the campaign trail to force cities to stop being welcoming places to all. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has reaffirmed our status as a Sanctuary City, and commitment to provide a safe and welcoming city to all that visit and make the District of Columbia their home. The DC Council is equally committed to this premise. So while I encourage everyone to be educated on actions to take should the Trump Administration pursue a campaign promise to force cities to end participation in the program, rest assure that we will do everything possible to continue to have the District of Columbia be the welcoming and safe city it now is for EVERYONE.
Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday. I will put together a list of holiday events around town and will send you that information at the beginning of the month.
Thank you.
