The veteran PBS newscaster, who helped pave the way for many journalists of color, has passed away.
Gwen Ifill, the beloved co-host of PBS NewsHour and decorated journalist, has died at the age of 61, CNN reports.
Michele Norris, a close friend of the journalist, confirmed the news on Monday.
Ifill, who was noticeably absent in coverage leading up to the election, had been battling health issues, according to CNN. She took a leave of absence from NewsHour in May.
