The role of the members of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) in the Civil War is one of the best-kept secrets in American history. Through their valor, service, and sacrifice during the war, enslaved and free blacks, living in the North and South, courageously advanced the cause of freedom for more than 4,000,000 enslaved people. According to the National Park Service, 'The black soldiers and sailors disproved the claims of African American inferiority and laid the groundwork for the future struggles in citizenship and voting rights that would continue for over one hundred years.' The African American Civil War Museum is dedicated to honoring and celebrating the contributions of the members of the USCT. It tells their stories and preserves for posterity their historic role in American history- a watershed movement towards freedom, justice and equal civil rights for African Americans. The Museum is committed to exhibitions and educational programs that sustain the soldiers' remarkable role in history for future generations. In late 2017, the Museum will move into 15,000 square feet of newly- renovated space in the historic Grimke School. This move will triple the Museum's square footage and enable it to display more objects, develop rotating exhibitions, engage more visitors in educational programs, the African American Civil War Museum is truly Moving Foward!
