Subject: Fw: DC Emancipation Day Parade is Fast Approaching!
DC Emancipation Day (DCED) obserances are fast approaching! We invite all DC residents who believe in freedom and equal citizenship rights to march with Stand Up! for Democracy in DC (Free DC) and many other groups, organizations and bands on Saturday, April 8 at 1 pm in the DC Emancipation Day Parade to commemorate the 155th anniversary of the release of over 3,100 enslaved persons held in bondage in the nation's capital - this historic release occurred on April 16, 1862, a full 9 months before the issuance of the national Emancipation Day. DC Emancipation Day is an historic event which with the help of the iconic Loretta Carter Hanes resulted in a law establishing DC's ONLY official local public holiday. The parade is part of many exciting and educational events held annually in churches and schools across the District of Columbia. Besides being a great historic occasion, DC Emancipation highlights the fact that DC residents are "First Freed" but "Last Free" because we lack the full citizenship rights that this emancipation was to establish. We encourage all DC residents who are striving to achieve equal rights through DC Statehood to march in the parade as a symbolic way to demonstrate their respect for this significant first and to show that the movement for DC Statehood has a direct connection to our ongoing movement for equal rights. Because on Easter Sunday falls on April 16 this year, the parade is scheduled for April 8, however, the DC Government and public schools will be closed on Monday, April 17, 2017. Come join the parade, strut you DC Statehood gear and bring banners or wear period clothing of the time...the parade will to be followed by festivities at Freedom Plaza and fireworks! Take this opportunity to spread the DC Statehood message locally and to the many tourists who will be in DC for the Cherry Blossom parade which will precede our parade. Bring the children, it is a family affair!
