[WardFive] Fw: Reminder: Retain Voting Rights Vigils at the Supreme Court: May-June 2013

I received the attached fliers and below message from Phil Portlock of "Voices 4 Justice", a group working to organize 1 to 1 1/2 hr rallies in front of the Supreme Court to show support in protecting the full 2006 re-authorized Voting Rights Act .

On February 27, 2013, The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Shelby County (Alabama) case challenging the constitutionality of Section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which requires states and  jurisdictions with a history of voter discrimination to receive pre-approval from the Justice Department or a Federal District Court for any voting changes (i.e., voter ID) to ensure such changes do not discriminate against voters who are members of a racial, ethnic or language minority.

It is a sad commentary that people of color, other minorities, etc have to fight to retain voting rights every 25 years. Now, with having to again fight these kinds of attempts to dismantle the Act, as some members of society are also trying to do with other Acts, laws that protect citizens rights, is a call to come together to protect our interests, for it we don't, no one else will.

Hope you will consider committing at least 1 hr or more to help/support the cause for our current survival to forward a solid foundation to those that come after us.

Phil can be reached at 202-529-8286 and/or the3rdeye@verizon.net.

Please share with other organizations, churches, social groups, community based organizations, other listservs, residents, etc. to get the word out.  Thanks!
