Subject: Update about 'Restore Librarians to DC Schools' on Change.org

Dear School Libraries Supporters,

For the past 14 months we've been involved in a fight for school libraries and librarians. Thanks to your support, we've made real progress in getting librarians back in the schools. Unfortunately we have to fight a little a longer. Would you take 5 minutes to send an email this TODAY to help?

The DC Public School Chancellor is testifying before the council's education committee on the FY14 DCPS budget THIS MORNING and we desperately need your voice. Please email the DC Council, Mayor, and Chancellor today. I've listed their emails (in two formats) and a sample letter you are welcome to use. Please take 5 minutes to help DC schools have a librarian and books by sending an email today. Thank you!

All best, Bella Dinh-Zarr (Kai's mom)

SAMPLE EMAIL: Save Our School Libraries

Dear DC Council, Mayor Gray, and Chancellor Henderson:

In light of Chancellor Henderson's testimony before the DC City Council today, I am writing to urge you to re-instate a full-time librarian in every school, regardless of size, and provide the funds needed for books and other materials. There is currently NO MONEY budgeted in the FY14 DCPS budget to buy any books or materials next year! A full-time librarian, a library of 20 volumes per student enrolled, $25 per student per year for books, and sufficient computers, magazines, and e-readers in every school is not too much to ask for the education of our children. DCPS's own School Libraries Task Force has recommended these improvements and DCPS's $800 Million budget can afford the cost. I, and thousands of others, urge you to put these basic requests in place by the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year. Thank you.
