Dear riders of the Metrobus Rhode Island Avenue and Baltimore Avenue Lines,

 

Metro will be holding the two more public meetings for this project on November 12 and 13.  You're invited!  

 

The study team will be showing a set of improvement options – including potential new routes and services – and wants to get your feedback on them.

 

If you're a rider of Metrobus routes G8, T18, 81, 82, 83, 84, or 86, please come to one of the meetings and let us know which options you would like to see recommended to the Metro Board for approval!

The dates, times, and locations of the two meetings are:

No presentation will be given at the meetings.  They will be "open house" format, meaning that you can arrive any time between 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm to review the improvement options and talk with project team members.  We would like to get feedback about these preliminary plans from as many riders as possible before completing the final report and submitting recommendations to the Metro Board in 2014.

All members of the public are invited and no RSVP is necessary. Please let your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and fellow riders know about these public meetings!

Both facilities are wheelchair accessible. A Spanish translator will be available for those who prefer to communicate in Spanish.

National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Ticket Lottery

 

The National (White House) Christmas Tree lighting ceremony is on Friday, Dec 6 at 5 p.m. Free tickets will be distributed through an online lottery which will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct 31 and end at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov 4. Go to recreation.gov. There are 3,000 seated tickets and 14,000 standing-room tickets available through the lottery. Winners will be notified by email by Nov 7.

The District’s leaf collection season starts Monday, November 4 and residents can go to Leaf Collection Schedule to find the collection dates for their neighborhoods.  The schedules also are being mailed to residences that receive DPW trash and recycling collection services.

 

“It looks like this weekend will be perfect for raking leaves,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  “We ask people to check the schedule for when their leaves will be collected and then rake their leaves into the treeboxes the weekend before their collection cycles start to make sure their leaves are collected.”

[WardFive] 2014 Rangel Int'l Graduate Fellowship Application Opens!

The Rangel International Affairs Program is now accepting applications for the 2014 Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship.  The Fellowship welcomes applications from young people interested in careers of international service.  It encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need.  The Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program provides benefits valued at up to $90,000 over two years toward a two-year master's degree, arranges internships on Capitol Hill and at U.S. embassies, and provides mentoring and professional development activities for those who want to become Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State. Fellows may use the fellowship to attend a two-year master's program in a U.S. institution to study an area of relevance to the Foreign Service, including international relations, public policy, public administration, languages, or business administration. Upon successful completion of the two-year fellowship, Fellows enter the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Applicants must be college seniors or graduates looking to start two-year graduate programs in fall 2014, have GPAs of at least 3.2, and be U.S. citizens. Mayor  Gray Cuts Ribbon on New Harry Thomas Sr. Playground

 Design Theme Based on Nature's Mathematical Fibonacci Sequence

  
(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Vincent C. Gray; Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Interim Director Sharia Shanklin, Ed.D.; Department of General Services (DGS) Director Brian Hanlon; ANC 5E04 Commissioner Sylvia Pinkney; Romaine Thomas, the widow of Harry Thomas Sr. and other Thomas family members; Cynthia Law Taylor, the widow of Lionel Taylor; Georgia Taylor, the mother of Lionel Taylor; and Cleopatra Jones, president of the Friends of Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center joined the Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the newly renovated Harry Thomas Sr. playground, located at the Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center (1743 Lincoln Rd., NE) in Ward 5. Students from Langley Elementary School were also in attendance today.

The Harry Thomas Sr. Playground is one of 32 new play spaces renovated under Mayor Gray's Play DC: Playground Improvement Initiative. Play DC is the largest playground renovation project in the District's history. The Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center community, along with Ward 5 stakeholders, attended several community engagement and planning meetings with DPR and DGS to finalize this project.

"DPR is proud of the final outcome of the newly renovated Harry Thomas Sr. Playground. DPR and DGS continue to work together on these amazing Play DC playgrounds, ensuring that District residents have safe, educational and inviting play spaces to enjoy. The innovative and creative use of the Fibonacci sequence theme, a very common mathematical sequence, to design a play space shows that we can infuse education and recreation in exciting and inventive ways," said DPR Interim Director Sharia Shanklin, Ed.D.  "The efforts you see here today are a culmination of the Eckington community, DPR and DGS coming together to create a truly unique play space. This playground will provide positive exercise and play experiences for the residents and visitors of Ward 5."

Today's ribbon cutting also included a field dedication to the late Lionel Taylor. Mr. Taylor's career at DPR spanned 37 years, from 1972 to 2009, and even though he retired in 2009, his involvement with DPR and his dedication to the Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center community never ceased. After retirement, Mr. Taylor served as the chairman of the Friends of Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center, and he was a constant presence in the community and at the center. Whether through his support at the many events held at the recreation center, volunteering his time to work with the youth of the community, or taking a moment to assist with the football, kickboxing or basketball games, Lionel Taylor left an unforgettable, indelible mark on the Harry Thomas Sr. Recreation Center community and staff. Today's field dedication will ensure that Lionel Taylor's legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.

"We enjoyed designing and constructing this mathematical-themed playground in Ward 5 and hope that children and families throughout the city will enjoy it for years to come," said DGS Director Brian J. Hanlon.

The Harry Thomas Sr. Playground's "mathematical-sequence theme" derives its inspiration from the Fibonacci mathematical sequences (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.), where each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. When these numbers are used to create squares, the result is a beautiful spiral, similar to those found in fiddlehead ferns or certain mollusk shells. Other features include new curvilinear ADA-accessible walking paths; a community garden; a fitness loop; rain gardens and bio-retention areas; two new basketball courts; one new tennis court; new custom playground equipment; interpretive signage and interactive art poles; new solar-powered scoreboard; new adult fitness equipment and shaded picnic area. As part of the Sustainable DC Initiative, the playground features a green roof pavilion and an extensive storm-water management system for its new community garden.

DPR currently operates 92 playgrounds in the District. To date, Rosedale, Palisades, Noyes, Fort Stanton, Volta Park, Raymond, Fort Greble, Emery, Harrison, Hamilton, Banneker, Macomb, Takoma and Harry Thomas Sr. playgrounds are complete under the Play DC: Playground Improvement Initiative.

[WardFive] Still time to sign up for Stokes Saturday Academy fall classes -- open to all ages

Hello all,

There is still time to sign up for E. W. Stokes PCS's Saturday Academy classes for all ages -- adults and children -- on Saturday mornings! 

Newly added: Beginner German for children and adults and Beginner French for children and adults.

My kids are in the science and engineering class which is a LOT of fun!  There are also various art and music classes, yoga and zumba classes, a chess class, and more!  See complete list of classes below.

E. W. Stokes PCS is located at 3700 Oakview Terrace NE in Brookland (between 12th and 13th and Perry and Otis Sts NE).
