DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION CONSIDERS NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS; WELCOMES NEW STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES
Washington, DC – The District of Columbia State Board of Education (State Board) will hold a public meeting to hear a presentation on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). While the District already has rigorous, well-regarded science standards, the NGSS are seen as an important opportunity to improve not only science education but also student achievement. The NGSS, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, are intended to reflect a new vision for American science education and are designed to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. The State Board is responsible for approving content standards.
The State Board will also welcome and swear in its two new student representatives, Jason Perry from Wilson Senior High School and David Spruill from Friendship Collegiate Academy. Student representatives, non-voting members of the State Board, act as a connection between the student population of the District of Columbia and the State Board.
Finally, in accordance with its recently acquired budget and personnel authority, the State Board is scheduled to vote on revised organizational by-laws. The by-laws permit the State Board ot select two (2) teachers, one from a traditional public school and one from a charter school, to join the State Board as a non-voting member.
The public meeting will occur on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 5:30 pm in the Old Council Chambers (1st Floor) of 441 4th Street NW. All students, parents, and educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony.
Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at the meeting are asked to notify DCSBOE staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at sboe@dc.gov and furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business the Monday prior to the meeting. They should also bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.
The meeting will air live on District Knowledge Network (DKN) Comcast Channel 99, RCN Channel 18, and Fios Channel 12.
