Subject: Central Union Mission Needs Your Help to Continue Helping Others

Hello Commissioner Steptoe,

Attached is information about a Coat Drive being conducted by WHUR Radio to benefit Central Union Mission.  While the drive is not taking place in our Brookland neighborhood, since we are neighbors, I am hoping you can get help us engage the community in our efforts to help poor and needy people.

Since Central Union Mission began its transition from R Street, NW,  to 12th Street, NE, and the renovation process for our new shelter at 65 Mass Ave., NW, we have been desperately low on food and clothing donations.  We believe this decline in donations and in-kind gifts is primarily because people think we have actually closed.  So we need help in reminding people that we are still in the business of serving and helping poor and needy people—those often neglected or overlooked by society.  As the winter and the holiday seasons are fast-approaching , we not only need new warm coats for children and families, but also food, clothing, and household goods as well.  We need your help.

I have attached a flyer about this weekend's coat drive and this link will give you more information about our food needs.  Understanding that it is short notice for Saturday's event, Saturday is not the only day we will accept coats and warm clothing.  Commissioner Steptoe, this is the beginning of the season when people want to give and we need them to give.  Our Food PLUS Center is not too far from our Administrative Offices in Brookland and it is this location that receives a good portion of the donations that the Mission in turn gives away people experiencing great hardships.

We welcome your thoughts or ideas on how to engage our Brookland neighbors in the work of the Central Union Mission.  Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn
