Essay Contest Information

 

"Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility"

Join Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. as we embrace the National Education Association's (NEA) American Education Week Theme in our National Essay Contest.  Our theme, Great Public Schools: a Basic Right and Our Responsibility; highlight the importance of bringing together educators, school staff, parents, students, and community leaders in a unified effort to build great public schools.  The themes also reflect NEA's vision of calling upon America to provide students with quality public schools and education so that they can grow, prosper, and achieve.The essay contest is open to all youth in middle school and high school.  Each contestant will prepare his/her essay based on the theme: 

"Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility"

The top three entries will receive monetary awards.  The monetary awards for each level are listed below.

 

Local Awards

·          1st Place Local $100.00

·         2nd Place Local $ 75.00

·         3rd Place Local $ 50.00

National Awards

·         Middle School& High School: National $500.00 

·         Middle School& High School: National $250.00

·         Middle School& High School: National $100.00

Guidelines:

  • Compose an essay based on the theme: Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility
  • Write no more than three double-spaced typewritten pages (about 500 words)
  • Submit your essay on 81/2 x 11 inch white bond paper (one original and two copies)
  • Complete FORM B: Signed Essay Application and Declaration of Originality
  • Mail all essays to:

  • Essays must be postmarked by NOVEMBER 1, 2013

Competent and impartial judges will evaluate all essays.  Each essay is evaluated on originality, introduction, content, organization, neatness, sentence structure, grammar, mechanics, clearness of purpose, and conclusion.  The decision of the judges is final.
