(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced the first of three open hiring fairs to promote the over 600 summer positions the agency will have available for the 2014 summer season.   The first hiring fair will take place on Saturday, February 22, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Raymond Recreation Center (3725 10th Street, NW).   Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to fill out the online summer hire application prior to attending the hiring fair.

At the fair, prospective applicants will be able to learn about the many positions DPR has to offer; speak with representative from various divisions; and for applicants who have already completed the online application by 6 pm on Tuesday, February 18th, they will be eligible to conduct their onsite interview.  There will also be opportunities to fill out an application at the fair.  All applicants are asked to dress in professional, interview attire and bring both an electronic and hard/paper copy of their resume.

The 2014 summer hiring application was made available to the pubic on February 3 and applications will be accepted throughout the summer.  Two additional hiring fairs will take place on Saturday, March 15th and Saturday, April 19th.  The time and locations for the fairs will be announced at the end of February.  To find out more information about DPR's Summer Employment opportunities, position descriptions, program descriptions and for future hiring fair dates, please visit http://summer.dpr.dc.gov.

DPR is committed to hiring candidates who are highly qualified, and are committed to providing a positive workplace experience.  The following divisions are accepting summer applications:

  • Summer Aquatics staff will have the opportunity to be pool managers, assistant pool managers, lifeguards and customer service representatives (CSRs).

  •  Summer Camps staff will have the opportunity to be facilitators, assistant facilitators, counselors, activity specialists and more.
  • Summer Operations staff will have the opportunity to be warehouse facilitators, drivers, assistants and more.
  • Summer Roving Leaders and Safe Summer staff will have the opportunity to be facilitators and assistant facilitators.
  • Summer Meals Program staff will have the opportunity to be senior food monitors, food monitors and administrative assistants.
  • Summer Administrative staff will have the opportunity to work as associates at DPR's Central Office. Please note, these positions are in an office environment and professional attire is required.

All positions are for seasonal (summer only), 40 hour a week positions.

DPR's 2014 Summer Employment hiring process is as follows:

  • Apply online – Complete the application and personal statement (to the best of your ability) for the program that you are interested in.  Please be certain to make any edits and corrections to your application prior to submission. All applications must include an updated resume (attached to online application).

    • Notification 1: Confirmation – Applicants will receive an email confirmation that your application has been received and the screening process has begun.

    • Notification 2: Pre-Employment Screening – Applicants that are screened as a highly qualified candidate (based on application, personal statement and resume) will receive an email invite to participate in a hiring fair hosted by DPR's Human Resource Department. The pre-employment screening process will begin mid-February and continue through the end of June. Applicants not selected will receive a status email thanking them for their participation in the summer hiring process. All notifications will be sent within ten (10) business days of initial submission.

  • Phase 1: Hiring Fair – At the hiring fair, applicants will be able to speak with DPR staff about the Agency and the various summer programs. They will also participate in a panel interview conducted by DPR Program Managers. Those successfully completing this phase will receive a contingency letter (on-site) with further instructions to complete the hiring process.

  • Phase 2: MPD Background Clearance – Once an applicant successfully completes Phase 1:  Hiring Fair they will be required to complete a Background Clearance with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The Background Clearance process could potentially be scheduled for the day of the Hiring Fair; however, applicants will be instructed on how to follow the appropriate steps for completion. This does not guarantee employment, however, it will assist DPR's Human Resources in expediting the hiring process if or when selected.

    • Notification 3: Pre-Employment Clearance – Once an applicant successfully completes Phase 1: Hiring Fair and Phase 2: MPD Background Clearance, they will receive an email confirmation (this could take 2 – 3 weeks) with additional instructions about the summer hiring process and the scheduling of a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

  • Phase 3: Suitability Clearance – Applicants will be scheduled for pre-employment drug and alcohol screening to be completed with the DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR). It is imperative that this pre-scheduled appointment be kept, as it required for continuation in the summer hiring process. Any missed appointments will result in applicant elimination from the process.

    • Notification 4: Invitation to Orientation – Once an applicant has successfully completed the pre-employment screening process (including passing both MPD and DCHR clearances), applicants will receive an invitation to attend a DPR Human Resources Orientation.

  • Phase 4: Orientation and Offer Letter – All on-boarding documentation will be completed, an on-boarding package will be distributed, and applicants will receive a formal offer letter from DPR Human Resources.  The offer letter will state your position, program, salary, start date, and end date.

 Please note the following:

  • Applicants are only permitted to start working once all steps are completed and a signed offer letter from DPR Human Resources has been presented to the applicant.
  • The DPR Summer Hire process is not the same at the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

These positions are covered under D.C. Law 15-353, the Child and Youth, Safety and Health Omnibus Amendment Act of 2004, effective April 13, 2005, as amended. For that reason, all selected candidates for hire will be subject to criminal background checks, traffic record checks, or both, and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additional information regarding these requirements will be available at the recruitment fairs and during new hire orientations.
