Trash And Recycling Collection Issues
On Thursday, February 13, we had a very heavy snow, below freezing temperatures and icy alleys, which couldn’t be accessed safely; therefore, we notified the public that collections would be suspended for that day. When we were able to get into the alleys, we opted to concentrate on collecting trash because of the obvious public health issues associated with uncollected trash. We were able to collect almost all of the trash and recycling placed at the curb, but about 70 percent of our collections are made from the alleys.
The following week was a holiday week so both trash and recycling collections were made on the next day, through Saturday, leaving only one day, Sunday, before the beginning of this week’s collections.
Throughout this winter, our crews have faced weather-related challenges that impeded collecting trash and recycling. Additionally, our absenteeism was higher because of flu and colds. When we miss collections, the next week’s trash and recycling are added to what was missed; therefore, our loads are heavier and take more time to complete. As a result, our collection days have started at 7 am and continued into the evening until 7 pm and sometimes later.
DPW would like to express our appreciation to our customers for their understanding and patience as we work our way through these issues. We regret the inconvenience that has been caused.
