We have seen and are still combating the negative impact of tobacco and alcohol on our youth, families and communities. Companies that produce these two legal drugs have disproportionately targeted and affected communities of color, thus we are committed to protecting these communities and the rest of our city from the consequences of legalizing a third recreational drug. Looking at the sobering costs in health care, education, accidents, lost productivity and law enforcement as a result of substance use, we know that our city, cannot afford a third legal drug as this will only increase the negative effects we are already seeing. Thus, we declare that "Two is enough" and urge our fellow citizens to do the same by voting NO on Initiative 71. Bible Way Church of Washington, DC. Founded in 1927 by the late Bishop Smallwood E. Williams, Bible Way has a legacy of leadership on critical public policy issues - both local and national. Pastor Demery has stepped boldly into this tradition and has already sponsored a weekend conference, No Access; No Use, last September, as well as a "no ticket" gospel concert in June of this year - both activities designed to increase public awareness of the dangers posed to our youth by policies which increase marijuana access and the resulting risk of naïve initiation into life-long drug use and addiction. Over the years, Bible Way mobilized support for local self-government as well as for the national civil rights of African-Americans and all minorities. The Church has also been a leader in the development of affordable housing, including housing for seniors, and today is proud of having produced some 500 units of affordable rental housing in its downtown Washington, DC neighborhood, within sight of the United States Capitol. |
