At a time when our voting machine infrastructure is in need of upgrades and replacements, and when external attempts were made to hack into our state voter registration systems in our last election, the Republican-controlled Committee on House Administration last week voted, on a party-line vote, to terminate the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), the only federal agency that protects the integrity of our voting systems. The Urban League recognizes that access to the Internet is not a luxury but a necessity in the 21st century economy for low-income communities of color to, at a minimum, gain access to employment opportunities, educational resources, and essential government services. In his effort to roll back regulations impacting the industry, the executive order directs the Department of Treasury to identify existing laws, regulations and government policies "that inhibit Federal regulation of the United States financial system in a manner consistent with the Core Principles."
