The Mayor and the City Council should be pushing for Daycare Centers to offer a Curricullum that is geared towards truly educating our kids early.  Earlier this week, the W5COE sent out the following email.  If this Church can offer a curricullum that is tied to the STEM approach, then our City Council and Mayor should be putting forth the necessary legislation to mandate that Daycares also update their offerings to be more substantial.  Looks like the costs is about the same or even less than what is being offered at this Church.

If Daycares are going to utilize the Public Funds, they should be monitored as well as held to a certain educational standard.

Dear Parent/Guardian or Sponsor:
We are pleased to announce the Henry C. Gregory III Family Life Center Foundation's Summer Enrichment Program for grades 1-8. The program is designed to help your student prevent summer loss in the two most critical areas: reading and math. The camp is located at Shiloh
Baptist Church, 1510 9th St NW (near Shaw-Howard U metro station) and will run from July 8 to August 9, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Before and aftercare are available.
The Foundation has partnered with the Shiloh Baptist Church and NASA to provide an enriching program for the children of tomorrow through positive programs and a safe environment. NASA will provide the program with a nationally aligned STEM curriculum. The program will provide academic excellence, engaging lessons, a NASA fitness program, music, dance/drama, arts and crafts and free lunch. Space is limited, and there may be a few need-based scholarships available.
Enclosed is the registration form you will need to complete for each child you register.
There is a $75 registration fee, and then the cost for the camp is $150 per week if registered by May 31st, or $175 per week if registered thereafter. Before and aftercare are available.

Dear Friends,

I know I rarely send emails requesting support for a petition but, oh well... I do need your support this time because the cause is very close to my heart (and yours, if you are in DC).

Mayor Gray wants to reverse a rule that allows home daycare centers to expand. He will force them to revert back to 10 kids instead of 12 (that's 20% for those math whiz-es out there).

"My Little World" is my baby's daycare center. If this rule passes, two of his friends (or maybe Julian) will be kicked out. I wish I could show you how happy all the kids are there, how much they learn and enjoy each other. I should also tell you how much Maria and the teachers do for the babies. You can probably picture her surrounded by a horde of babies with snotty noses fighting for a toy and pulling from her pants. And Maria smiles like nobody else, she cleans noses, soothes nerves and keeps everyone happy.

Please help Maria and the community that depends on her to be able to keep all her babies in the class.
Sign this petition today. Julian says thanks and waves buh-bye with his sticky hands.

Ileana

PS: please post it on facebook and forward it to your fellow mamas in DC. Together we can find the support the deserve.
