DC Snow Team To Deploy Tue., Dec. 10
The DC Snow Team (Department of Public Works and Department of Transportation) will deploy more than 200 plows to commercial and residential streets Tuesday morning, December 10 to be on site in advance of the upcoming winter storm predicted to start with sleet, then change to snow and drop 2-5 inches before ending in the late afternoon. The daytime temperature will be 36F and will fall to 27F at night. Any snow, slush, or melting from the snow event will freeze overnight Tuesday. Wednesday is expected to be sunny with a high of 36F and a low of 19F.
“The upcoming storm will present its some challenges,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “Sleet is expected to start falling during the early morning rush hour before changing to snow about 8 am. That means traffic can be affected so we urge motorists to travel cautiously.” He added that this will be a heavy snow, which could lead to power outages from downed wires. Should power outages occur, Pepco strongly urges the public to call 1-877-Pepco-62 (1-877-737-2662) to report power outages and downed wires (stay away from downed wires and report them immediately).
Property owners are asked to pre-treat their sidewalks with an abrasive such as non-clumping kitty litter, a deicer or rock salt, and clear snow from their sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of the storm. This snow season, the Snow Team is testing the effectiveness of pet-safe deicer on bridges with pedestrian sidewalks.
DPW leaf collection crews are the backbone of the Snow Team; therefore, leaf collection was suspended Friday, December 6 to prepare for Sunday’s storm. These crews will return to collecting leaves when conditions allow after Tuesday’s snowfall and collections in Area A neighborhoods will continue until they are finished.
Winter Weather Safety and Preparedness Tips: Motorists are asked to clear all snow from the vehicle first, then drive cautiously. Assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.” Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after winter storms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather. Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.
