Dear Members,
Tonight, you demonstrated why our voices matter. With our partner Empower DC, we made clear that we will no longer be divided over educational issues in Washington, DC. AFT Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Lorretta Johnson described events happening in over 80 cities across the country. We witnessed and heard from nearly 600 powerful students, parents, and teachers about what the Principles That Unite Us mean to them. We talked with our neighbors and friends, and as several school stakeholders endorsed the Principles, everyone committed to developing a community-led vision for public education.
Last, but certainly not least, we gave mayoral candidates a chance to hear our demands for our schools, and adhere to our solutions. Community representatives asked questions and candidates were compelled to answer. The energy in the room made one thing very clear: We have started an intense and critical journey to reclaim our schools, and put the public back into public education.
I hope you will join us this December 14, 2013, for a roundtable discussion with Councilman David Catania, chairman of the education committee. Our conversation will focus on Teacher Voice, Quality and Leadership so that we can address proposed legislation and make our positions known. We'll meet at 10am, McKinley Technical High School, located at 151 T St NE on Saturday.
Hope to see you there. Thank you for joining us.
A luta continua,
Liz Davis, President
Washington Teachers' Union
