[WardFive] Rev. Michael C. Murphy: Rest In Peace

To my US African Sister Cities Family and friends of Peoples United Church of Christ

I received this today from Barbara Mason in Lansing,  MI

There is no easy way to share this news.  This morning one of my dearest friends went home to be with our Heavenly Father.  Rev. Dr. Michael C. Murphy will long be remembered as a dreamer and an activist.  He was a preacher and a politician, a humanitarian and friend to so many.

Rev. Murphy  served on the Lansing City Council and in the Michigan State Legislature and was especially interested in health and human service issues.  He described himself as first and foremost a “Pastor-Preacher.”  Lansing Magazine named Rep. Murphy as one of the “100 Most Influential” persons in the Greater Lansing community in 2005.  In addition, he was always an advocate for social justice issues and civil rights issues following in the footsteps of his father, who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King.

Rev. Michael C. Murphy was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) in 1984.  He holds dual standing with the AME church and the United Church of Christ.  After founding and serving as pastor of St Stephens UCC in Lansing for over twenty years, he became pastor of People's Congregational  UCC church in Washington D.C. where he currently served.    Though he was pastoring in D.C., he remained active in the Lansing community.

Rev. Murphy (Mike) passed away this morning.  But, he will live on in our hearts and through his many worthy deeds.

As I receive information about arrangements, I will inform you immediately.   May he rest in peace.
