[WardFive] Re: [ward5] Re: Fwd: Brookland Middle School Meeting presentation link

Aaron -- Yes -- but Rae Zapata and Co. tried to hoodwink us on US - the Community chose this location.   It is there now and W5COE and the rest of the "School Teams" and residents need to fight for what makes sense. LaSalle on Riggs -- a primary school has a Huge Football/Soccer Field.  And a State of the "Art" Middle School being built in 2013-14 doesn't.

But, this is how the approach has always been.  Look at the New Dunbar and the rest -- it is for the Jetson's.  Our Kids (who will be attending a "ART" school) and our Community gets no respect.  Like Eric and I both have addressed -- trust and believe -- if this was a school intended for White Kids -- and that is where all this school choice comes into play because of history and economics -- they would spend the money and underground the parking, create more usable space on the surface and redesign the entire landscape to be more accommodating of what is truly needed in a Middle School.

But -- because of the Land Acquisition approach that they initially had, it convoluted everything.  This is when Green is not really Green but really about $$$$ Green.  They really don't want to invest into our kids fairly.

You hit on the head the land space is to small. Period when they had three other option that would have worked 110%.

Eric - just so others know you and I are good friends -- know that any surface space being used for parking on a site that is too small for a MIDDLE SCHOOL is IMPROPER USE OF LAND. Since you cant put play/rec/sports related space underground, they should put the parking underground and free up space on the surface for our kids and community to recreate -- allowing for people living more green lives.

That approach should be just as or more considered for "LEED" POINTS.  If this was a bigger footprint, surface parking (cheeper parking) would be understandable. In actuality - in any city environment, land usage under the site should be important similar to how Air Rights are important - maybe not as valuable but usable just the same.

So it is not about parking but instead, it is about maximizing the space being utilized to provide the most opportunities for our kids and the community involved.

Rob and KPW - I think you are preaching to the choir here. We all
definitely see the need for parking. I think we all want to be as
conscious as possible about the environment, but in the end, I don't
want to see form over function. Sure it can look pretty and be LEED
certified, but it also needs to fully serve the needs of the kids and
community. The school will be divided into two wings: an academic wing
and I forgot what buzzword is used for the other wing. Essentially,
this other wing will have the gym and auditorium type stuff that can
also be used by the community which is separate from the classrooms
(academic wing). The academic wing is located in the back of the school
which is where the parking is slated to go. If you are a senior and
want to go to some community event at the school, you have to park out
back and then walk all the way around the school to get to the
auditorium type space. I know these are the issues that are being
addressed but just so you understand the current state of the
conversation.

At to the windows - we haven't seen any renderings, but one of the
pieces of LEED is taking advantage of the natural light. They are also
going to use a geo thermal system for heating and cooling. The
architect involved has a track record of designing some really cool
schools and buildings so I am pretty excited to see what they come up
with. I don't get the sense in any way that would design anything that
resembles the current building which definitely looks like a prison IMO.
We shall see soon because I think the pace is going to pick up.

That's fine, but sometimes you get to the school by car and need to
park. Metro is good too, but sometimes you have kids in two schools and
need to drive due to time constraints.

they would have to construct the building from a more "green"

"Leed" points. It is just as much/maybe more limiting as it is being
pushed as "green". Not providing parking options when the opportunity
presents itself is prejudicial against folks who want to drive --
especially our seniors.

Kenyan -- I hope you and your folks are listening to what is needed for
Middle School Children -- use some of that money that has "just showed
up". If you are going to build it, build it properly with the ability to
make both facilities increasingly attractive.
