Kids Ride Free to School this Fall thanks to Bowser bill
Council approves unprecedented access to affordable transportation to and from school
Washington, D.C. – Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser's "Free Transportation for Students Amendment Act" was approved today. The bill will provide all students with free access to Metrobus and DC Circulator, and maintain subsidized access to Metrorail, starting this year.
"This is a major victory for students all across the District of Columbia," said Councilmember Bowser. "With closures impending and more students attending schools outside their neighborhoods, access to affordable transportation is a necessity. Although we don't have a school bus system in our city, kids should have a free safe ride to and from school."
The new program, introduced by Councilmember Bowser, amends the DC student travel card program which allowed students 18 years old or younger in public, charter, parochial, and private schools to purchase discounted fare cards. Kids Ride Free will provide free travel to and from school, on Metrobus and DC Circulator, to all students up to the age of 22. The existing discount will remain for Metrorail.
The bill was fully funded today and takes effect October 1st.

"Meeting with parents and students in my Ward and throughout the city, I know there are a lot of reasons for chronic truancy," said Councilmember Bowser. "Today we made sure that having to pay for transportation isn't one of them."
