Dear Save School Librarians petition signers, Thank you very much for your support of our Save School Librarians efforts in DC. We started this fight for libraries many months ago and, thanks to your support and the School Libraries Task Force's hard work, the Chancellor has publicly committed to a library and librarian in every school. But now we need the Chancellor to allot the funds to fulfill that promise. There is now a $400 Million budget surplus (a recently announced increase from the $140M surplus previously) in the city budget. This is many times more than the estimated $40 Million needed to provide all DCPS schools with the books, other library materials, technology, and music resources that they urgently need. But, for that to happen, we need to urge the Mayor and Chancellor to immediately allot some of the surplus budget for schools now, and not, as they have decided, to save the surplus for a "rainy day fund." DC schools are in trouble and they need immediate help to save them. Please take a few minutes to email or call the Mayor and Chancellor today and urge them to spend at least $40M of the $400M on schools: Mayor Vincent Gray vincent.gray@dc.gov 202-727-6300 Chancellor Kaya Henderson kaya.henderson@dc.gov 202-442-5885 and please continue to urge your friends to sign this petition. Thank you, as always, for your support of school libraries and schools.
