[WardFive] Re: Moving forward--Brookland Middle School and Turkey Thicket Recreation Center Re: [ward5] So, other than the Taft, Backus, Bunker Hill sites,

"I see the plans as workable and seek to take it to the next level."  While I think other sites are possible but they don't want to explore that for whatever reason,  isn't what I am saying EXACTLY what you just said.

I am only asking that we get the MOU done first and that they put the necessary money into facilitation all the possible usable land to be USABLE --- LIKE undergrounding the parking for the School and Rec. Center instead of having to take away play/rec surface area from being used for just that.

Also, I don't want DCPS to take ownership of this land because when you and I DIE, they might be selling, leasing, developing this as well.

We see things differently and operate differently.  I see the plans as workable and seek to take it to the next level.  I like to see how we can work around obstacles.  A school was there before and it worked.  Let's figure out how to replace that school and make a newer one work.  There will be some give and take.  I see possibilities.  A school can work on the grounds if people are willing.  I would have preferred Backus, but that's out.  Taft would have been good but that is out.  I like this area, though others may prefer another place.  My kids traveled across the city to school so I know what that is like while I walked to junior high.  I think we can have a great middle school in Upper Northeast while taking community stakeholders concerns in consideration when doing the design.  I applaud the Ward 5 Council on Education, Councilmember McDuffie and other Councilmembers, Ward 5 School Board member Mark Jones, and others for trying to make sure that Ward 5 gets a quality middle school in this area.  Two more schools are expected in other areas of the ward.  Like you, Rob, I don't think one person has all the answers and look to see what other ideas should be considered.

Mrs. KPW -- Why do you and others keep putting the Cart infront of the Donkey.  We need to understand the utilization of Turkey Thicket by DCPS before we accept them trying to slip in under the common theme "the community chose this".

You wouldn't accept picking one of three plans for the remodelling of your house if your neighbor decided to build on his property to include your yard without getting all the details.  If I am correct, it wouldn't matter if they made your land the most beautiful if you couldn't utilize it.  Schools have rules and regulations that superceed everything. I keep sharing that this thing has not been fully disclosed from the start and has lots more to be disclosed.

Am I missing something here or are you pushing to get folks to chose blindly?  We need a planning session with the Architech as a community to maximize the site planning and Why can't we have all the answers including the MOU before we pick the final design and push the "go" button -- what's the rush?

It will be interesting to see what other people in the ward think about this project.  It's taken a while to get to this point and it appears a lot of work has gone into the planning.  Citizens need to provide their comments to take it to the next level.

Taking over the Rec. Center to do this should not be the option. I support having a middle school but with ALL that they have proposed thus far says that they are approaching this in the most SELFISH manner.
When you build anything in a city, you have to accommodate for the lack of land bu putting parking underground -- especially when one side of property is main thorofare, two sides are residential and the forth does not exist.
That is to start with. Then, we have not identified the allocation of our budgets and if the property will now be under DCPS control. When Kenny Diggs identified Turkey Thicket as "the tennant" - I am even more concerned.
Do not get fooled by "Trojan Horses" like folks usually do with people dressed in suits/soothing words. There is a lot to be uncovered here.
Trust when I alert you to this. More beauty and more people means more money for me. So ask yourself why I warn of all that I do. I sure don't make friends with the people in "charge". One thing for sure - folks/they can't say that I don't care about kids.
THIS SMELLS WRONG FROM THE NON-DISCLOSURE FOR OVER A YEAR ABOUT CO-LOCATION TO TWO PRESENTATIONS FOCUSSED ON CO-ATTACHED. THERE IS MORE TO MEET THE EYE THAN CHOOSING A SITE.
WE SHOULD HAVE A COLLECTIVE PLANNING MEETING WITH THE ARCHITECH TO DESIGN THIS IF FOLKS REALLY HAVE TO PUT A SQUARE PEG INTO TOO SMALL OF A TRIANGULAR SPACE.
And once again - they really should speak to the ownera of the 3 houses on yhe south side Shepherd. I have spoken to two owners and while they were not thinking of selling, they did not say no. The 3rd is a renter.
If we are going to do it, let's stretch the possibilities and retain ownrship/control of our Rec. Center.

It's not about the center of the ward.  It's about replacing a service we lost.  We lost two middle schools in this area and we want one back in this area.  Brookland meets this criteria.  The other sites are off the table, so we move forward some kind of way.

So, other than the Taft, Backus, Bunker Hill sites, or keeping our elementary school at Marshall and Utilizing Langdon which has space to build -- which is closer to the center where our kids will be arriving for middle school (as Brookland is almost in Ward 4) how about,

It is a Shame that this the way it is.

To quote Gandhi, 'First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.'
"Win" at what cost?  It is a shame that we still don't have an analysis of what was lacking at each school (an analysis) and what it would have taken to keep some of the schools open.

And because DCPS has such a great track record of closing schools, changing things, drastically increasing proficiency. Heck -- the planning is so awesome that we kept buildings in positions so that we don't have to build a middle school
that we "suddenly" needed on top of a Rec. Center.

In other words, close schools, give away the best locations for our Middle Schools then within a few years - guide hungry blind mice with "middle school cheese" to take over our Rec. Center -- so we have to be guilted with "it's about the kids". Well, I am here to tell you that it ain't about the "kids".

So -- We need a Middle School and they agree it is a Priority
So -- We have funding for a Middle School
So -- We have funding for Turkey Thicket in past budget and new budget.
So -- We have playground money -- added money specific to Playground.

So -- Why can't we have a Separate State-of-the-Art Middle School at a different location and a Separate State-of-the-Art Rec Center.  That's being about "KIDS" as well as Community.

Show us the other locations that we supposedly "chose" from and see if there is a better fit before going ahead.

Like a good neighbor - state farm (DCPS) is here -- and I am a "French Model". For once, it would be nice that they and the Mayor/Economic Development are not 1000% right and we are all "too ________ stupid to understand".

So, other than the Taft, Backus, Bunker Hill sites, or keeping our elementary school at Marshall and Utilizing Langdon which has space to build -- which is closer to the center where our kids will be arriving for middle school (as Brookland is almost in Ward 4) how about,

a. Emery over on the back side of McKinley?
b. Hamilton -- already has tennis and basketball courts, baseball field and a Track -- that is perfect and on the Redline Metro.

2. What about placing a Middle School on the McMillian Site later for more kids when the time arises in return for all that funding that we are doing for that site.  That is were we can include a "School/Park" for the Community.

I don't get why certain folks would support for an extended Rec Center to take over Shaed Elementary but want to develop a Middle School to decrease/limit the use of Turkey Thicket.

Perplexed -- but please give us the option of choosing from the sites considered again since we have funds to still make Turkey Thicket "beautiful" and have a nice playground.
