Great response, Tara.

This is an unfair and silly conspiracy theory that gets us nowhere. I think it's especially unfair to Councilmember McDuffie. I doubt that Chancellor Henderson, responding to community activism from different stakeholders including the Ward 5 Council on Education, initiated the "Ward 5 Great Schools Initiative" in 2011 as part of a grand master plan to cut ribbons before a 2014 election. For those curious about the evolution of the middle school plans, please visit the below link. There are two powerpoint presentations you can download that discuss the need for a middle school in our area and the outreach that has been completed over the last two years. When the plan was unveiled in 2011/2012, the engaged community stakeholders believed a 2014-2015 school year opening was too late for the kids currently at education campuses lacking proper middle school resources and amenities. The middle school cannot come soon enough for those children and their parents who have been patiently waiting for equitable educational accommodations in Ward 5. I'm grateful for this investment in our community and I think it will enhance our neighborhoods by reclaiming residents that reluctantly commute to sought after schools in other wards.

So many of us have wondered why the city government is in such a rush to build this new middle school at Turkey Thicket by September 2014.   May I suggest one very likely major reason: the election in November 2014.  Both Mayor Gray and several city councilmen, including Mr. McDuffie, would probably much rather have their pictures taken opening a school than stating that they delayed the selection of a site for a middle school "to examine other possible sites."  So it could be about budgets, available funding, etc. but I suspect the re-election of our current mayor and several city councilmen is a major driving force to get the building open just a few weeks before the 2014 election.   Brookland might have very good reasons to object to the rush job, but the rest of the city will just see a photo in the Post and the news on TV of all those smiling faces cutting the ribbon on the new school.
