[WardFive] Re: Turkey Thicket/Brookland Middle School powerpoint presentations. Re: [ward5] Join DGS to Discuss Future of Brookland MS/Turkey Thicket on Saturday 3/23

Good Afternoon Everyone,

This is a small example of how conflicting schedules will work for all who want to utilize the Turkey Thicket Site when the School comes.  Saturday, we had to cancel a usage of the Gym to host this meeting.

I know this is about the Kids, but at some point -- you can't be non-inclusive on this.  There are more things that needs to be ironed out other than picking of a site.  We need underground parking and a Football/Soccer field on top as well as MOU's that allows for the community use of the space.  We also need to retain the usage of the School Space (rec. center, auditorium, etc) in the trade agreement that is agreed to regarding usage of our Rec. Center Site.  They also need to try to acquire the three houses on South Side of Shepherd Street to extend the usage of the land and we need to keep the Current Turkey Thicket under Parks and Rec. Control and not allow our site to become part of DCPS.

Furthermore, adjustments need to be made to the design to include bike riding paths for kids and a skateboarding area for our kids.

AND AGAIN -- We need to know how much money is allocated in the BUDGET for the REC. Center so that we know what we are working with for TURKEY THICKET.

Last, we need to understand the onset of travel on the metro for our Middle School Kids (especially girls) as it coincides with Luke C. Moore - those are adult teens in an alternative school.  Don't know how the schedules coincide or conflict when school gets out.  I know that the morning would be about the same travel time. This also goes back to the programming after school if we are going to have lots more middle schoolers from various parts of Ward 5 and the City at this Rec. Center location.

The Saturday, March 23rd meeting on the proposed Brookland Middle School that Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie arranged to be held at Turkey Thicket was well attended.

The middle school is going  be located on the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center/Closed Brookland Elementary grounds.  Other possible locations have been ruled out.  The issue now is where on those grounds, at what cost, and with the fewest deal breaking disadvantages.  The center is budgeted for $50 million.

No design selection was made at the meeting.  The co-location (connected to the recreation center) has been ruled out.  Three options were outlined in the slideshow presentation (http://dgs.dc.gov/turkey_thicket_park_brooklyn_middle_school).

My personal preference is the Stand-Alone School at South Point of Park.

Concerned citizens should get their comments in by the end of the week.  The contact information is below.  A decision will probably be made by the end of this month or the first week of April.  A traffic study will be done once an option is picked.  Please focus on making your suggestions known based on the three options only.  There will not be a vote to determine the preference, only your communications.  Whatever the option decided, I hope there will be lots of windows in the school building and plenty of learning going taking place.  Read the pros and cons on each option.

It is important to let the people in charge know what you want!  Your comments, concerns, and preferences are encouraged.

Three options:

  1. Stand-Alone School At South Point of Park
  2. Stand-Alone School on Expanded Existing School Site
  3. Stand-Alone School on  Existing School Site

Option I

Option II

Option III

From the handout, here is a link with the options that have been considered.

Subject: [ward5] Join DGS to Discuss Future of Brookland MS/Turkey Thicket on Saturday 3/23

Dear Residents,

Many of you share my continued disappointment with the current discussions on a proposal by DGS to co-locate the new Brookland Middle School with the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center.  As I reiterated at last week's School Improvement Team (SIT) meeting, DGS must continue to engage the community and review ALL designs on the table, including the initial schematics of two separate facilities.

I also noted that many residents had difficulty attending the past SIT meetings because they have been occurring in the evenings on weekdays.  Per my request, DGS has agreed to host a meeting this coming Saturday at 11 AM in Turkey Thicket's large conference room. We have instructed DGS to bring copies of all proposed designs.   Please bring your que stions and comments.

Our Ward 5 students need, and deserve nothing short of, a new, high quality middle school and we will not settle for anything less.  Thank you.

In Service,

Kenyan
