Hello folks,

This Friday March the 29th we will be filing the lawsuit to block the closure of 15 DC Public Schools, which would displace over 2,700 students of color. Please join us to support this very important effort to Save Our Schools.

We will be filing the case Friday morning at DC Superior Court.

Please join us at 11am in front of the Carl Moultrie Courthouse (500 Indiana Ave, NW) for a press conference and rally to celebrate our historic lawsuit.  We would love for you to be there, please let us know if you are able to join us.

Let's continue to fight these unjust and discriminatory school closures!

Empower DC Files Lawsuit to Stop School Closures
Supporters Rally at Superior Court for First in the Nation Suit

On Friday, March 29th the city-wide community organizing group Empower DC will officially file its anticipated Lawsuit against the District Government seeking an injunction against the closure of 15 DC Public Schools. While cities across the country rally against the closure of public schools, DC will become the first in the nation to file a legal challenge against closures that disproportionately impact black, brown and low income students and those with disabilities.

At 11 AM, following the filing, Lead Attorney Johnny Barnes will be joined by members of the 8-person legal team and the suit's plaintiffs to address the media and supporters in front of the Carl Moultrie courthouse about the importance of the case.

The District has closed 29 DC Public Schools since 2008, starting just after the City Council passed legislation giving ultimate control over the schools to the Mayor, and gutting the powers of the School Board. Yet, the city has not studied the impact of closures nor provided any evidence that they improve, not disrupt, education. Empower DC has called for a moratorium on closures during a period of study.
