FREE Summer Robotics Camp

What:**** A two-week summer Robotics/STEM camp. Lunch and Metro passes will be provided to all attendees and there is NO FEE to attend. During the two-week camp, we will learn and build robots using the Vex Robotics Design System. No experience is necessary! We will learn building and programming skills as we build robots. The more we learn, the bigger the robots will get. The second week will culminate in a fun robotic competition, where we will design and build a robot to play a beanbag game.
 
Volunteers wanted for Georgia Avenue Beautification
This Saturday, June 30 from 8:00am-12:00 noon, the second phase of the Georgia Ave. Beautification project, sponsored by the Shepherd Park Citizens Association and Concerned Neighbors, Inc. will begin. Volunteers are needed to help plant flowers in the tree boxes along the Gateway area and along both sides of Georgia Ave. We'll meet at Ledo Pizza's parking lot. Any amount of time you can spare for this worthy project will be greatly appreciated. Bring gardening gloves and your own implements if you have them. Some tools will be supplied. Family Preservation Specialist - Columbia Heights/Shaw Family Support Collaborative
The Family Preservation Specialist, under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Family Services or Family Services Coordinator and under the direct supervision of the Team Leader, is responsible for providing resources and referrals to families, conducting home visits, and advocating for families within the context of their team assignment (e.g. Intake and Assessment Team, Housing Team, etc). The incumbent is responsible for maintaining documentation for their assigned cases and completing agency assessments, case plans, and other forms as necessary. S/he is also responsible for providing outreach services that employ prevention and intervention techniques, and conducting collateral visits. Lastly, the incumbent will provide rotating emergency coverage.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES: Home visits - Conducts home visits as determined by family's level of risk and safety issues. Monitors level of family functioning and stability to ensure housing, clothing and food needs are adequate. Builds and maintains trust and rapport with families. Builds on strengths of the family to assist them in meeting their needs and responding appropriate to crises and stress. Assists the family in modifying behaviors and/or conditions. In coordination with supervisor, reports incidents of child abuse and neglect to DC Child and Family Services Agency.
• Case Management – Identifies and articulates critical issues confronting the family. Reviews intake summary/case plan in collaboration with direct supervisor and in peer case review to determine appropriate courses of action(s). Maintains documentation of interactions among family members during home visits. Assists family in applying for resources. Coordinates Family Group Conferences (FGC) as needed. Refers family for family meetings as appropriate.
•Outreach - Conducts collateral visits to schools, hospitals, and governmental and nonprofit agencies in order to assist client in understanding responsibilities and services available (e.g. Medicaid, Social Security, TANF, etc.). Assists or guides clients when necessary to determine appropriate or necessary service(s).
•Resource and Referral– Investigate resources in the community to meet needs of clients. Maintains a current and up-to-date listing of all community-based programs, schools, civic associations, churches, and businesses to assist clients in obtaining food, clothing, housing, employment, furniture etc. Maintains working relationships with outside agencies to promote the work of CH/S FSC, to be aware of community issues that may affect clients, and to advocate for client services.
•Emergency Coverage– Provide emergency coverage to ensure support is available when clients are in need.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school diploma and less than 5 years of experience in community-based social services or related field such as child development, family relations and/or behavioral health or; Associate degree/some college credit and less than 3 years of experience in social service or related field or; Bachelor of Arts/Science degree in social work or related field and no work experience in social service.
Incumbent should also be able to demonstrate some knowledge of community resources; possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills and be generally familiar with Microsoft products. Must speak and write English/Spanish.

Free Kids Yoga Classes at Budding Yogis, Sunday July 1
Budding Yogis in Chevy Chase DC is offering free kids yoga classes as part of the Budding Yogis' Teaching Yoga to Kids Certification on Sunday, July 1. The 10-10:30am class is for 2-4 year olds with an adult. All other classes are drop-off only, so parents can enjoy 30 minutes to themselves. These special free classes usually fill, so please sign up early! Class times are below.
2-4 year olds with one adult - 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM
3-5 year olds (drop off) - 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM
5-8 year olds (drop off) - 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Advocates for Youth is looking for enthusiastic writers and content creators ages 16-24 to be featured contributors to Amplify, the online community for young people interested in the reproductive and sexual health and rights movement. You will:
 
1) Beginning in August 2012, work with Amplify staff mentors to develop writing and new media skills and contacts.

Amtrak Police sponsors Exploring Program for boys and girls 14-20
Do you know a teenager that is interested in Law Enforcement, if so please forward them the following information. The Amtrak Police department will be sponsoring an Exploring Program. Exploring is a program within the Learning for Life (LFL) Corporation. LFL is an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America.
Exploring is a unique career exploration program for young men and women ages 14-20. It provides students with an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields. Youth get hands-on experience to determine whether or not a particular career field is right for them. Youth develop valuable networking contacts with professionals working in their selected career fields, and they get to know other teenagers and young adults sharing their same interests and aspirations. Exploring can be the first step in identifying career possibilities while having fun in an exciting and informal environment.
