Good morning,
Years later, this is the 22nd century's return to "Slavery by Another Name! Interesting though, this is "Class" Warfare and a strong addictive culture has grown out of it in both the White and Black Culture.
As it seemingly relates to the mentality of many middle/upper middle "class" Whites - there is a culture of "inner city" life and a certain style of living that obviously takes precident over the needs of others - example the need to support a Street Car System in an environment that doesn't need it, its expensive financial outlay with no ROI and it having to be subsidized. The most ironic of all, it is counter-intuitive to Bike Lanes (the usage of 38 miles of Streets), health benefits and Ozone Effects. Just imagine if those 38 miles were Bike Lanes instead and the money was put into More Efficient Buses - that would make for a much better and healthier society and fits within the module of a "green city".
As for our Black Culture, many of us have allowed the "good" and mediocre opportunities to pacify us and sedate us into a false reality. Even when not pacified or sedated, It is sad to hear it when the response is, "it doesn't matter anyways, they are going to do what they want to do anyways"! Especially because many of our seniors who really know our history are dying off or simply just tired of fighting, the leadership links have been weakened. Worse, many of us have digressed to be totally disengaged from the reality of what it took to get this far (for many reasons - from drugs to success) only to now be subjected to a different type of colonization and the SELLING of our own people. Like I have said, the Wilson Building is the new Slave Block and our own "CHIEFS" are selling subjects of various Tribes - in our case - WARDS!!
I understand, people need their jobs as they have mortgages to pay, family to secure, vacations to pay for, etc. So, instead of standing up, it is easy to say that "I am just doing my job" like DDot said the other night. That man knows and empatizes but has his "job" to do - at least to follow orders given to him! And he is not the only one - I am sure that these orders come from our top positions, Deputy Mayors and the rest - who I am sure some have "fringe benefits" in addition to their paycheck!
It is time to realize that this will hurt the entire community whether we think we are safe or secure! None of us (Black or White) are insulated from the effects of this War on our youth. I mentioned rising the rate of Cognitive Dissonance the other day amongst Whites. Well, we need to increase the level of Cognitive Dissonance amongst the Black community as well. The educated Brain of Whites and Blacks will find a way to balance out at a higher level of conscious thought than we are currently operating from and hopefully deliver us into a unified front as to our collective priorities! The only "Tracks" that we should be laying are tracks for the ABOVE GROUND RAILROAD that is necessary for everyone's survival! Think about it, it is like creating the firing squad that we all will be standing in front of and not knowing who is going to be the recipient of the Bullets!!
Just like the previous administrations failed to adjust to the lessening of our enrollment population, the current administration is not paying attention to the future needs of our increasing enrollment. It is quite stupid to overbuild just for increased tax base without proper planning for increased enrollment and the need for smaller classes or fail to be challenging to our evolved children, especially if we continue to sell off our schools. Don't they realize that eventually, many of the people who are moving here or staying here who are young will have children and the ones who can't have will be adopting. I actually have a premonition that adoption will be the new "dog" craze that will be the cool thing to do to show compassion for Planet Earth!
But what do I know?

Reiterating the point in this article re: DeShawn Wright's intention to close several DCPS facilities (and sell the land) and how it contradicts the Chancellor's statement (false rhetoric) about involving parents and the community in decisions that affect students. The truth is that war has been declared on our children, and they might as well be using water hoses, billy clubs and German Shepherds...but we would recognize those search and destroy tactics the enemy used against us as we integrated lunch counters, and fought to sit in the front of the bus. When they dismantle effective programs that serve Black children, they arrogantly define our future for generations. Our children and our children's children will be relegated to third class status, thrust by lack of earning capacity into the prison system, where private prison owners use this captive labor to manufacture goods. This phenomena is unfolding all over the country. Our babies deserve a better destiny.

DeShawn is going to have a fight on his hands. We don't want our schools closed and sold to developers. We want smaller class size. From: Aaron McCormick <aaron.mccormick01@gmail.com>

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown swallowed the Committee on Economic Development last year after Harry Thomas Jr. was forced to step down. Thomas had been accused, and later pleaded guilty to, federal charges of stealing more than $353,000 of taxpayers' funds intended for disadvantaged youth. Brown's move added to his considerable power. His Committee of the Whole already had oversight of education, property management, zoning, and the budget. Economic development came with a huge multi-billion dollar portfolio. Consolidating that kind of power in the hands of one individual -- even the legislature's chairman -- seemed reckless at the time.Maintaining that committee structure now is dangerous, considering the questionable state of Brown's political future. His 2008 election committee is under federal investigation for alleged campaign finance violations. If, as some have speculated, Brown is charged with a crime and forced to step down, the council could descend into chaos.A scrimmage surely would ensue to fill the leadership vacuum. By law, a temporary chairman must be selected from sitting at-large legislators. There likely would be a push to ensure only a Democrat assumed the post. That fight, marked by unvarnished ambition, would be exacerbated by having so many critical functions lodged under the chairman. The arrival last week of the new Ward 5 representative, Kenyan McDuffie, provides the perfect reason for realigning council committees. But Brown's spokesperson Karen Sibert told me the chairman has "no plans currently in place to make reassignments."Other legislators should push the envelope. At the very least, the Committee on Economic Development should be reestablished. A case also could be made for a separate Committee on Education. With a recovering economy, there have been signs development is on the rise. Nearly every ward touts important projects: Skyland in Ward 7; McMillan in Ward 5; Walter Reed in Ward 4; and Reservation 13 in Ward 6.Still, the District's growth plan cannot rely principally on market whims. Development must be deliberate, incorporating anticipated demands of the city's changing demographics while satisfying the needs of long-time residents. That important work requires an attentive and engaged council -- one that is overseeing the mayor, who also has a cloudy political future. The legislature's role in education reform is even more critical.Deputy Mayor for Education De'Shawn Wright is gearing up to effect the operation of charter and traditional public schools. He has said he intends to close several DCPS facilities. He also has indicated he wants to alter admission policies for charter schools. Meanwhile, Chancellor Kaya Henderson has launched her five-year strategic academic plan. That agenda and a total public education budget of more than $1 billion require more sophisticated and rigorous oversight than has been provided over the past 18 months. That can happen only with a singularly focused committee -- not one distracted by zoning, property management and general budget issues. With their chairman under a cloud, legislators may want to hope for the best. But their duty to District residents requires they prepare for the worse.Jonetta Rose Barras's column appears on Monday and Wednesday. She can be reached at jonetta@jonettarosebarras.com.
