RE: [WardFive] Re: opposition to Car barn at Spingarn Re: [ward5] ugent please circulate to the fullest

Rob,

There is no plot to close the schools and sell them to developers.  The fact of the matter is that the location they have selected is the most logical and folks are going off of emotion instead of logic which is sad.  I mean yes it will be across the street from the entrance to Langston but that has nothing to do with Langston and won’t impact it negatively, the new leadership is doing that enough on his own (but that is another story).  The plot of land is a plot of land not used by anyone and which was home to a library which has been closed for at least 10 years or more (so long I can’t even remember).  Folks keep on saying that this will have a negative impact on the neighbors but the closest residents of this area live in Ward 7 not Ward 5 and haven’t been up in arms about it.  Or at least my Grandfather who lives a few doors down from the gas station and his neighbors haven’t.  Further the location is already owned by the city which means it won’t cost any additional revenue to obtain the land and as Wendy stated it is right on the edge of the lines for the actual street cars.

As for the folks who want to say that something is being dumped on the ward this is nothing further from the truth.  The most logical location is the land which isn’t being used and which also comes at the lowest cost.  The only other option would be to find another way to redevelop that area which again would still lead to something that the residents don’t like.

Your other points however weren’t bad ones.

Hello Jaime,

You sound fair in your request.  The question is - is this the best use of that location.  Because the City owns the land doesn't mean they should have the right to put anything there.  The fact is that this has been an outrageously horrible plan/implementation from the beginning to present. Here we have an opportunity to stop the hap-hazzard approach and take the time to go through the process of negotiating with other more suitable locations to place a "barn" to the most recent and biggest waste of $$/decision of our city - Street Cars.  It seems like there is a sudden rush and somehow $$$ seems to be involved.

1.  Is this "Car Barn" the best use of that land and is the land Zoned for it??

2.  This land was previously a library.  Would it better serve as a Library for a neighborhood that needs it or even a Huge Olympic size Pool to be utilized by the schools and neighborhood.

3.  These four schools are the only schools which sits across from the Oldest Historic African American Golf Course.  Wouldn't it be best to save those schools for our kids and develop a program to include Golf.  I am sure that National Parks Service would be open to making Langston Golf Course available to our kids in DCPS.

4.  Instead of plotting to close these schools and possibly sell them off to Developers, can DC make this location a High School that has Competitive events held there.  We already have a Great Track and Football Field across from it as well as basketball courts that could be enhanced, so including Swimming and Golf would make these schools unique.

Just a few thoughts that would make for a better environment for our kids and their opportunities in life.  They can learn to tinker on trains at a different location.

It needs a place to be people will complain about anything! I haven't heard a reason that is so substantial that I would be like gasp...... Don't put that there!

And if I'm not mistaken aren't the tracks ending/ beginning right there on Benning road!?

We are talking about the trolley that will be coming soon.....right!?

Great questions!  However, with the decline in DCPS high school enrollment, the current number of students and personnel currently housed in that building, the current Ward 5 production line of Charter schools, how long do you think it will be before that school will be closed?  Thinking the immediate will not help us long term.

Some on the listserv don't buy that ploy to make the car barn a place for education enrichment too.  Some of us think that there are better suited places for the car barn and the city waited until the last minute to look for more suitable places.  Some on the listserv thought that Union Station or RFK parking lot would have been better but we get excuses, excuses why not.  The aim is not to stop the streetcar even if one does not think that is the best use of funds, but to locate the car barn in a place other than school for our young people.

Anyway...

Why are we opposed to the car barn?  I thought that there would be some educational advantage  for students at Spingarn and Phelps.

I thought they already told us our opinion and concerns didn't matter and that they were only concerned with H Street.  Our councilmember submitted a letter of opposition and they still didn't care.  People don't even care if you vote for them these days.  I'm just glad to see Bloomingdale getting some attention about the flooding.  At  least now I know that somebody knows how to get something done.
