Michigan Park Christian Church on Oct. 7, 2012, will celebrate the second anniversary of its pastor, Rev. Marvin J. Owens Jr., with the Rev. Monty Chandler, assistant pastor of Brown Memorial Baptist Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., as the guest preacher for the 10 a.m. service.
The theme for the pastor's anniversary celebration is "Reclaiming Our Territory."
Rev. Owens is the fifth pastor in the Michigan Park Christian Church's 116 year history, having begun his tenure Aug. 1, 2010. Under his leadership, the church has added 100 new members, weekly attendance has increased by 50 percent, and the church's community presence and engagement has grown significantly.
Prior to coming to Michigan Park Christian Church, Rev. Owens served as the co-pastor of the Lake Shore Christian Church in Euclid, Ohio. He served as the pastor responsible for shepherding the congregation into becoming a multicultural ministry. Rev. Owens also served as senior pastor of the Williamsburg Christian Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 14 years; and as associate minister of the St. Phillip's Christian Church, also in Brooklyn.
Rev. Owens earned his bachelor of arts in religion from Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas, and his masters of divinity from Harvard University. He also received a pastoral counseling certification from the Blanton-Peale Institute in New York City. He and his wife, Barbara, are leaders of "Kingdom Couples," a national marriage support and couples ministry.
