Norton to Welcome Home D.C. Military Heroes Tuesday
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will welcome home from Afghanistan 70 soldiers of the D.C. Army National Guard's 273rd Military Police Company and 45 members of the D.C. Air National Guard's 113th Wing Security Forces Squadron at a ceremony Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 9:15 a.m. at the D.C. National Guard Armory (2001 East Capitol Street SE). Norton, who is devoted to the D.C. National Guard, has never missed sending off or welcoming home members deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait.
"The D.C. National Guard members do double duty. They are in some of our neighborhoods now with lights that drive out drug crime, or often they are deployed abroad just like the regular Army and Air Force," Norton said. "Fewer than one percent of Americans have served in uniform, but more than half of America's National Guard members have served at least one tour overseas. Some of our D.C. Guard men and women have been to Iraq or Afghanistan more than once, leaving jobs, families and mortgages. They are carrying a heavy load for the rest of us. It will be my distinct honor to help welcome these heroes home safe and sound."
Norton has continued to get funds for tuition assistance for the D.C. National Guard. The Major General David F. Wherley Jr. D.C. National Guard Retention and College Access Act was named for the former commander of the D.C. Army and Air National Guard who died in the 2009 Metro Red Line crash. The act provides financial assistance to members of the D.C. National Guard who wish to attend undergraduate, vocational, or technical schools.
