Norton to Probe New Drugs Facing a New Generation at Event Tuesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a showing of artwork by young people responding to drugs in their communities on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. in the Eastern Market North Hall (225 7th Street SE), Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak about substance abuse prevention efforts underway in Wards 5 and 6 as well as about her upcoming town hall meeting on Synthetic Marijuana.  Tuesday's event, held by the Ward 5 and 6 D.C. Prevention Center, will feature artwork from young Washingtonians living in Wards 5 and 6 expressing their concerns about drug use in their communities, as well as remarks by Norton and other community leaders.

"National Substance Abuse Prevention Month has begun, and I applaud the work being done every day to prevent drug use by the Ward 5 and 6 D.C. Prevention Center," Norton said.  "I am particularly glad this event will touch on the dangers of synthetic substances, like synthetic marijuana, or K2, the subject our Black Men and Boys Commission will explore in greater detail at a town hall on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library.  Synthetic drugs are a new but true menace to our communities, but the art exhibition will help raise awareness about the range of dangerous drugs and about what we can do about them."
