Hello all,

 

These past couple of days have shown that there is still much disapproval and resistance against Mayor Gray and Kaya Henderson's plan to close 20 more schools which will affect 3,800 students in our city. 

 

Our recent Save Our Schools Summit was well attended by students, parents and residents from each Ward of our city who are committed to continuing the fight against unjust school closures.  At the recent rally held at Mayor Gray's house dozens of students, parents and community members sent a clear message that School Closures do not work or benefit our young people and they need to stop immediately.

Thursday – January 17th

6:30pm – Sign making for the MLK Holiday Parade – Join us at the Empower DC office to make signs for the MLK parade happening this Saturday the 19th.  If you have ideas for signs and chants please make sure to join us.

 

Saturday January 19th – Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade

9:30am assemble at United Black Fund 2500 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave (across from Anacostia Metro)

We will march to Shepherd Park – bring signs and banners – our peace walk message will include Save our Schools/Stop Unjust School Closures and Let Ivy City Breathe/Job Training not Bus Parking at Crummell School

 

Tuesday January 29th – Journey for Justice, hearings at the Department of Education on the Impact of School Closures

2:00 – 6:00pm at DOE (400 Maryland Ave, SW) – Support students, parents and community members from around the country in calling for a National Moratorium on School Closures.  Listen to testimony from those directly impacted on the negative effects of unjust/discriminatory school closures.
