·         National Day of Service, Saturday, January 19th, 2012.

From Rev. Dr. Unnia L. Pettus:   I would like to remind you of our request that you and your congregation answer President Obama's call to service through a city-wide food drive. President Obama has declared Saturday, January 19, 2013 the National Day of Service and is charging Americans across the country to go out into their communities and serve.   In order to make the National Day of Service successful, the President needs the faith community to partner in an ongoing service opportunity on January 19th. We have been mobilizing the faith community to participate in a food drive at Trinity Washington University, which is located at 125 Michigan Ave. N.E., Washington, D.C. 20017.  Please call (202) 696-2790 or email ulpphd@gmail.com for information on how your church can start participating in the Day of Service in Washington DC.

Other items of interest:

·         Stand with DC Voting Rights.  In 2010 the DC Democratic State Committee issued a Resolution asking for the “Taxation Without Representation” DC license plates to be placed on the Presidential Limousine.  On January 8, 2013, the DC Council unanimously passed a Resolution calling once again for the DC License plates to be placed on the Presidential Limousine.  DC Vote has created a petition on the White House site calling for the same.  For any White House petition to get a response, at least 25,000 people must “sign it” within 30 days.   As of today a bit over 3,400 people have signed the petition with only 4 days left for the 30-days goal to expire.  If you haven’t done so, please sign the petition and forward link to as many people as you can.  The petition link is: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/place-dc-%E2%80%9Ctaxation-without-representation%E2%80%9D-license-plate-presidential-limousine/PQQHh1CW?utm_source=wh.gov&utm_medium=shorturl&utm_campaign=shorturl.

·         The United Planning Organization (UPO) hosted its 29th MLK Memorial Breakfast on Saturday, January 12th, at the JW Marriott Hotel.  To see photos and the speech provided by the keynote speaker, U.S. Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry C. Black, please visit:  http://dcireporter.com/upo-29th-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-memorial-breakfast/.

·         3 years ago, I came across a great article on Haiti.  On the 3rd anniversary of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, I wanted to share this article.  Very relevant today, the article was written in Spanish by prominent Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano in 2004, and published in various newspapers.  I translated the article to the English language, click link to read it, it is very interesting: http://dcireporter.com/haiti-the-white-damnation/.

Thank you.
