Dear Ward 5 Neighbors,
Today, Councilmember Orange introduced legislation prohibiting buses from parking at the Alexander Crummell School. I fully support the spirit of this legislation, and I stand behind the residents of Ivy City in their efforts to prevent the historic Crummell School from becoming a charter bus parking lot. I continue to work closely with the Ivy City Civic Association, Empower DC and other community stakeholders to ensure that Ivy City is the beneficiary of positive, thoughtful public investment. My deep commitment to balanced land use and environmental justice motivated my proposal for the Ward 5 Industrial Land Transformation Task Force, which is ramping up now and will be reporting its recommendations at the end of the year.
I want to clarify that while I applaud Councilmember Orange's interest in preserving the Crummell School, I have serious concerns about the legal sufficiency of the legislation he introduced. A full legal review of this matter is now underway. Until such time as I am confident that the bill is legally sufficient and could withstand a challenge in the courts, I will continue to pursue alternate opportunities to advocate for the residents of Ivy City.
In solidarity.
Kenyan R. McDuffie
Councilmember, Ward 5
