DC STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SEEKS OMBUDSMAN FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION
Washington, DC – The D.C. State Board of Education (State Board) seeks a qualified Ombudsman for Public Education (Ombudsman).
The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education has been re-established to resolve complaints, disputes, and problems faced by students and parents in both District of Columbia Charter Schools and in public charter schools. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is responsible for providing District students and parents with professional assistance in problem resolution as well as accurate, timely communication regarding public education issues. The Ombudsman will also identify and share trends as well as potential problems in order to contribute to the discussion around improving the delivery of educational services.
The Ombudsman will be able to assist District students and parents on issues such as: bullying/harassment, suspensions, expulsions, special education, enrollment, transportation, discipline, academic progress, truancy, transition from pre-school to Kindergarten, and more. The role of the Ombudsman is to facilitate and/or mediate conversations between parents and school officials, and guide all parties towards the resolution of problems, focusing on what is best for the student and advocating for fair processes along the way.
The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education was re-established and transferred to the State Board of Education by the "State Board of Education Personnel Authority Amendment Act of 2012." The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education was originally established as a critical part of the District's education reform plans.
