Weekly Update

The 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading and Mathematics Report Card was released earlier today. During the announcement, Secretary Arne Duncan noted that the report card "provides encouraging but modest signs of progress in reading and math for U.S. students."

Eighth grade reading scores--which have been flat over the last decade--have risen, and achievement among the largest minority group—Hispanic students—is also up. Another point to note is that higher-achieving students are making more progress than in previous years.

Basketball in Haiti

Secretary Duncan visited Haiti this week to tour schools, meet with education and political leaders and announce a new USAID investment. During his visit, he stopped to enjoy a game of hoops with one of the high school basketball teams.
