Greetings Neighbors and Community Supporters:

We are excited about the academic progress of our students and the instructional changes made by our staff.  It is amazing what can happen when students take ownership of their learning!

Reading Progress:
72% percent of our struggling readers in middle school increased their reading scores by 20 or more points with just 2 months of instruction.  Ever hear students talk about their new reading scores during recess and lunch?  No?  Well, stop by one day and enjoy the experience.

Highest growth by grade:
6th:  316 to 630.  This student is our 1st to move from the tier 3 reading intervention program (Scholastic System 44) to our tier 2 reading program (Scholastic READ 180)!
7th: 217 to 789.
8th: 1123 to 1325

Look out DC Public High Schools, 25 of those students were our 8th grade scholars!!!!  We are coming for you!

Next:  All students will meet with staff to map their reading goals and select an independent reading book for the month aligned to their new reading level and interest.

Attendance:
Last school year, Browne EC had the lowest student "in seat attendance" (ISA) rate of all DC Public Education Campuses.  This year, we partnered with the Brookland/Edgewood Family Support Collaborative (http://www.ebfsc.org/), the Flamboyan Foundation, and established an attendance committee to address the school's truancy issues.  Phone calls, attendance support plans, and home visits are working!  We are happy to report:
·         2% increase of ISA for elementary school students as of the final 12-13 attendance report
·         4% increase of ISA for middle school students as of the final 12-13 attendance report
·         126 students have perfect or improved attendance for the first advisory

Next:
A celebration of course.  We will honor our students and parents during a reception on Friday, November 15, 2013.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme (Primary Years and Middle Years):
Our IB coordinators, Ms. Ayasha Ware and Mr. Luther Sewell facilitated an engaging presentation for members of the Ward 5 Education Council, including President Faith Hubbard, Ms. Shenita Burney of the DCPS Office of Family and Public Engagement, and other Ward 5 DC Public School principals.  Our steering committee and instructional staff have been working arduously to incorporate the 10 IB Learner Profiles into their daily instruction.  Our goals is to make Browne Education Campus the 1st DC Public School with a Primary Years and Middle Years Programme on one campus.

·         The IB Primary Years Programme, grades K-5, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
·         The IB Middle Years Programme, grade 6-8, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

Next:
IB School Beautification Service Project in partnership with the Brookland/Edgewood Family Support Collaborative:  Saturday, November 23, 2013 (9:00 am -3:00 pm).
IB presentation to Browne EC families: Monday, November 18, 2013 (2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00)
